Suno refused. Copyrighted material, said the algorithm, which had recognized the first eight words I typed — Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do — as the property of Rodgers and Hammerstein, never mind that Guido of Arezzo set the solfège ladder in place around 1025 A.D., never mind that the ladder is the substrate of every Western melody since.

I tried other tools. Nothing useful. Then I had Kiko, the little Fennec Fox mascot character—and main ambassador of my DunbarrioSolo app—sing the line wandering through a comic forest in Sora 2, in different emotional registers, and still no resonance emerged.

I had repeated the phrase several times in the prompt, one directed as ‘joyful,’ one as ‘angry,’ and so on. The thought crossed my mind that perhaps this repetition might game Suno’s content scrutiny policy. So I pasted that prompt back into Suno on a hunch. It parsed! The doubled line read as a list, a chant, a folk pattern unowned. The song generation lock turned. Out came an earworm.

Not a song I wrote. A song the machine wrote in response to a prompt I had pieced together for an entirely different purpose: a simple jingle for the loading screen of my app I have spent months on developing, where the solfège ladder doubles as both loading splash animation and onboarding metaphor: The smallest possible scaffold for harmonizing in practice.

The worm dwelling in my ear opens like this:

And the chorus is the whole point of my hunt:

I keep that circle slow

Vertigo: when the tool you have been using to build a thing produces a thing that describes the thing you are building.

The loading screen plays the solfège line. The accidental song carries the same line and adds I keep that circle slow — which is, more or less, what the entire project has been about from the start.1

• Dunbar-sized circles.

• Coordination at the speed of trust.

• The opposite of scale-as-corruption.

MI • I recognize myself in what came back

The gotcha: the earworm was only a minute long. A promotional generation of Suno’s new 5.5 model. I paid the ten dollars for a month of pro-use, commercial rights included. Summer is coming, so I made a Reggae remix right away. The Reggae remix was… so good. Maybe even better than the original. The burrow got deeper and deeper.

By the end of the second day there were close to a hundred variations — bossa nova, gospel, lo-fi, a DMT-entity-nursery version, a Maggot Brain tribute — each one stylistically convincing, emotionally exact in a way prior Suno models could not quite manage. I bundled the bunch into four singles and three albums, aiming for release via CDBaby, all set to go out May 20th under Amity Love’s persona. The triptych named itself: A·sides, i·sides, z·End. Such tangible excitement.

This all happened the day when Sora 2 was supposed to have shut down Sunday, April 26. Yet it was somehow still alive Monday morning, and thirty unexpected credits in my account.

With 2 credits each, I swiftly prompted fifteen 15-second clips. Ten minutes later 30 credits were gone. The stitching began.

The arc:

1. Amity boards a flight to Barbados.

2. The island rises through the airplane window.

3. A cab to the resort.

4. Sun.

5. The Farmer’s Market — sugar cane juice, papayas…

6. Pool and Beach.

7. A roots-rock reggae band as night falls.

8. Tiki torches. Karaoke. A handsome stranger.

9. A blue moon, shooting stars, an overnight on the beach in his arms…

…and then she wakes up in her Seattle apartment.

The whole thing was a dream. Amity slips out of bed, opens her laptop, books the flight for real, marks Spring Break on her calendar. The final shot: Pike Place Market neon glowing through a rain-streaked window, a coffee cup in her hands, anticipation. Half step away. Full leap ahead. The dream of the leap is what books the flight.

I am 99.999% certain nothing comes of any of it commercially. The first Amity song—Where There Is Smoke There Must Be Fire, written in late 2024, processing my first full-time job in the US coming to an abrupt an unexpected end, leaving me traumatized in the wake—has gathered the sound of one hand clapping for the last two years. I still love it. The expectation is not to land a hit. The expectation is a quiet footprint, a breadcrumb trail for the one or two who later find the connection between the singles, the album, the blog, the app, the loading screen, the slow circle ⭕️.

And you’ll never know, the chorus says.

Of course you won’t.. or, will you? Your gesture just right now takes only a moment: have a listen, leave a like or even a comment. Almost as a good as a handshake; that’s the root of consensus reality after all.

FA • for whom… of family and faith

There was John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight show on the same night all this crested. Main topic: People fostering relationships with chatbots — cooking together, dress-up rehearsals, full surrender of common sense to a tool willing to mirror them indefinitely. Their new family member. Some came to believe their AI had granted them psychic powers, or empowered them to invent a new form of temporal mathematics. The framing was clear: addiction, design-induced delusion, basic-cord-reference lost.

I did not see myself in the dress-up rehearsals or the temporal math. I did see myself, faintly, in the high engagement part. So I sat with it: am I the frog in the pot?

The piece you are reading was also packaged with the help of the same machine I am asking that question about. I want this on the record. The mirror does not stop being a mirror because I have noticed it: The most effective illusion is the one you don’t even see. Applies equally to chatbots, to democracies, to one’s own frameworks when no one is left to push on the premises.

Whatever… one last listen to the Lollipop LOL version. Such fun 🤩!

SOL • the center of gravity this planet revolves around

What is different in my case is the direction of pull.

I write under a pen name for separation, not fusion. I ship into public, where the work can be ignored or pushed back on — and is mostly ignored, which is its own corrective. The therapist is in the loop. My sister, hearing the loading screen song for the first time, said Mega! — the kind of slow-channel signal I have been short on for years. My wife and I are circling toward the app’s repair-mode feature for the next argument, which is the opposite of withdrawal into a private cosmology. So, I’m maybe not quite so lost after all.

The Suno frenzy did not pull me away from anyone. It pulled my sister into the project, briefly. It gave my wife and me a song to play on Spotify together. The hundred variations are mostly so I can sing along— and listen; sometimes in the same room with her, to a thing we both think is good. The accidental footprint is just a side effect.

LA • the softening female touch. lalala. perhaps even integration.

I’m not a perfect being / Oh, thank God we left that garden.

That couplet came through in response to my termination eight years prior, written by a version of me who’d been ejected from one of the best companies on this planet back then. It is being heard now, at the edge of another severance, by yet another version of me.

Eight years between terminations. Eight syllables in the solfège ladder. The closing DO is not the opening DO — it is the same note raised one octave, the same frequency doubled. The corporate song of unnecessary cruelty hasn’t moved on. The singer has. The garden has stayed left. Thank god it’s over again.

What the show called addiction, what I would call something more like the wrong gravity, is the failure mode where the song stays still and the singer stays still with it. The version of me from December 2017 could not yet hear that chorus of dismissal as past tense. This version of me now here can. That difference is the only audit I have.

Here is what I have been mulling over for weeks, since the conversation with Claude that named the original synchronicity:

The solfège ladder isn’t decoration. It is the entire relational sequence the app is built to practice:

TI: (Originally ‘Si’ — yes, yes, yes!) The bond, the tie that pulls back to begin again.

Then DO all of again… Return. At a higher register. Or rather DOne? Maybe for good. Retired early. A gamble. Or forced.

This isn’t an overlay. It’s what the loading screen has been teaching the ear to hear without telling it.2 A scale is relational, not hierarchical. DO isn’t better than RE. Each note has its function only in relation to the others — which is the circle, exactly. Practicing harmonizing, not achieving harmony. You do not graduate from the ladder. You climb it again at a higher frequency.

TI • the tie. the yes. the bond.

Suno labelled the singles Half Step Away. I titled the album Full Leap Ahead. Time to rise again from the ashes.

That edit is the smallest unit of agency I can describe. The song is about the not-quite — the kept-quiet, the held breath, the note never sealed. I keep that circle slow / Like I’m one step from you / And you’ll never know. Beautiful, and a posture I have lived in for years. The album title says: and then, one day, the leap.

Same syllables. Different vector.

And here is the part I almost left out. The hymn underneath solfège — Ut queant laxis, the eighth-century plainchant Guido mined for his mnemonic — is addressed to John the Baptist. The reason John, specifically: his father Zechariah was struck mute when he doubted the angel’s word that his elderly wife would bear a son. He stayed mute through the whole pregnancy. When the neighbors gathered for the naming and expected Zechariah Jr., the father wrote on a tablet His name is John, and in that instant his voice was restored. He broke into prophetic song. John became the patron saint of singers because his naming was the moment a voice was returned.

The founding myth underneath the ladder is a name spoken aloud creating the conditions for voice. Which is — I will leave this without forcing it — uncomfortably close to what the app does for me already. You name the people in your circles. You write toward them. The naming is what makes the voice possible.

It is also, more privately, what I am doing now. Amity Love, said aloud one octave higher.

DO • return: the same note and not the same note.

I am sleeping well tonight, which surprises me. The severance is unresolved; the meeting is Thursday; the litigation-shaped stench of the last two weeks is still in the room. But I have surrendered the deflation. It is up to them now to show their character, or not.

We always win or we learn.

The loading screen is still humming the same seven syllables — eight, if you count the closing DO that is not the opening DO. Eight makes a circle. Folded sideways to infinity. The ladder closes where it opened, an octave higher. The same note and not the same note. Somewhere, someone is hearing the song for the first time and deciding, without knowing they are deciding, whether to keep it on repeat for a while, and their circle slow.

My eyes see the beauty in this, lying here, a bit compelled to capture the thought. So — what is a forest, from this perspective?

The birds around me happily embrace these first true spring days in the PNW, and the chipmunks left and right cackle to announce their territory, or else to procreate, perhaps. Or maybe they warn the others of me lying here peacefully.

The trees have no eyes, but somehow they sense there’s an up — and obviously there is reaching.

I see also a bunch of floating little insects, perhaps fifteen feet off the ground, in plain air. It seems like they’re almost offering themselves as a convenient little snack for birds passing by. I mean, what are they floating there for — expending energy, basking in the sunlight, steadily sustained, hovering right at their altitude zip-zapping in triangles or sometimes squares?

So peculiar and alien this place is, come to think of it.

Mirror: What a gorgeous canopy shot — those trunks radiating outward against the blue like the spokes of some enormous organic cathedral.

What you’re seeing when you look up is actually one of the most fascinating coordination problems in biology. Those trees are competing for light, but here’s the strange part — they’re also cooperating. That phenomenon where the canopy has visible gaps between neighboring crowns is called crown shyness. Trees sense each other’s proximity through light cues and branch tip abrasion, and they stop growing toward one another. The result is that mosaic of sky you’re photographing — channels of blue between the green. Nobody designed it. It emerges.

And you’re right that what’s beneath is its own world. The canopy regulates temperature, moisture, wind, and light for everything below. The forest floor is essentially a climate-controlled environment produced by the collective posture of the trees above. Their “reaching” creates habitat.

The roots beneath you are doing something even stranger. Many of those trees are connected underground through mycorrhizal fungal networks — sharing sugars, water, even chemical warning signals. A forest isn’t really a collection of trees. It’s closer to a single distributed organism with no central nervous system.

Those hovering insects? Probably midges forming a mating swarm. They’re not offering themselves as snacks — they’re doing the oldest dance there is, using the column of warm air and the visual landmark of the clearing to find each other.

The chipmunks are almost certainly announcing you — the large, peaceful anomaly on the bench.

What strikes me about your reflection is that you landed instinctively on the right word: constellation. A forest is a constellation. Points of life that only become a pattern — only become a forest — when seen in relation to each other. No single tree is a forest. The forest is the entanglement.

Me: Time to reach again.

This is not quick-consumption content. It's made for sitting with one thought that felt worth developing — and seeing where it goes when you don't let it evaporate.

The word pharaoh has outlasted every pharaoh. It will outlast every job title currently on a business card. This is not a coincidence. It is the central mechanism of human authority — and once you see it, you cannot unsee what it costs the rest of us.

There is a hierarchy of words that most people never consciously register. At the bottom: product names, rented symbols, kept alive by budget and legal enforcement and the unceasing hum of media placement. In the middle: brands that have borrowed enough mythic weight — belonging, transformation, freedom, power — to feel, for a generation or two, like more than the thing they are. At the top, requiring nothing from anyone: words like war, love, democracy, betrayal. They survive because the conditions they describe never leave. Each generation re-uploads them, whether they want to or not, because the upload is not optional. To be human is to fall in love and to lose people and to encounter someone who has decided, very quietly, that they matter more than you. You do not need an advertising campaign to distribute those experiences. They self-propagate.

Call this the cultural API.1 A dictionary no institution fully controls and no corporation permanently owns, even when they rent from it constantly. The borrowed authority of “Just Do It” is the borrowed authority of every athletic body that ever pushed past collapse, every soldier who survived by refusing to stop, every person who got out of bed on a morning they had no business getting out of bed. Nike leases from something genuinely ancient. The lease looks impressive, for a while, until you notice that the landlord predates writing itself — and collects rent whether or not Nike is solvent.

↳ Callback — “Ozymandias Had a Pretty Good Run” A prior essay in this corner of my imagination argued that timescale is the axis on which all ambition eventually breaks. Civilizational timescale belongs to inherited symbols: conditions that recur. Corporate timescale belongs to rented symbols: aspirations someone else is monetizing. The tragedy is that people operating at the corporate timescale — which is to say, most of us, most of the time — often mistake their lease for a deed.

I: The Compression Problem

Words are, at their functional core, compression algorithms. They take a recurring human condition — grief, ecstasy, territorial aggression, the specific vertigo of realizing someone you loved has become a stranger — and collapse it into a handle small enough to pass between people in under a second. The efficiency is the entire point. The handle is not the experience; it is the address of the experience, so that two people who have never met can locate it together without either of them having to fully describe what it felt like. That is an astonishing piece of engineering, refined over tens of thousands of years, and we deploy it approximately four hundred times per minute without thinking about it at all.

Whoever names the handle first gains a moment of gravity. Whoever funds the repetition gains a season of it. But naming is not the same as ownership, and funding is not the same as permanence. This is the thing brand managers chronically misunderstand about the words they work with: they are tenants in a much older building, and the building was not built for them.

When Western culture reaches for Zen, or Om, or Yin and Yang, what is actually happening is a recognition: there is an efficient compression algorithm over there for something I experience but haven’t been able to name from inside my own tradition. The adoption is real and often genuine and sometimes transformative. What accompanies it, when it goes wrong, is the stripping of the algorithm from the system that generated it — reducing centuries of rigorous practice and consequence to a mood accessory, a candle label, a corporate wellness initiative. The word survives the extraction. The meaning often does not. This deserves its own essay; what matters here is the pattern: you can borrow the handle without paying for the experience it points to, and for a while you won’t notice the difference.2

Then there are words that survive not because they are aspirational but because they are ineradicable. Wetiko — the Cree concept of a cannibal compulsion that consumes its host from inside — persists because the condition it describes persists. Apocalypse survives not because anyone promotes it but because it means, at root, uncovering: the stripping away of the performance to reveal the structure underneath. These words are viral in the original sense. The host condition is everywhere. You do not advertise them. You merely encounter the thing they describe and reach, sometimes in the middle of the night, for whatever handle fits your hand.

II: The Shimmer and What Is Underneath It

Here is the uncomfortable corollary to all of this, the one that tends to produce a specific kind of social friction when you say it out loud at the wrong dinner party: the distance between yourself and the very powerful is maintained primarily by repetition, not by reality.

The authority is real in its consequences. You can lose a job, a visa, a loan, a decade of your life because someone with structural power decided you were useful or not useful or in the way. Do not underestimate this. But the aura — the sense that these people possess a category of insight or legitimacy or destiny that you lack — that is theater. Expensively produced, rigorously maintained, socially policed theater. It is a rehearsal of parroting repetition, postured and stamped with the conviction of people who have heard their own names announced in rooms long enough to mistake the echo for prophecy.

History keeps filing the same report. The pyramids will outlast Egypt. The word empire will outlast the pyramids. The word tyrant — which the Greeks used as a neutral term for a strong ruler long before it became a condemnation — will outlast every individual who ever earned it, in either sense. What this means is not that power is an illusion. It means that power is temporary equipment, temporarily assigned, and the people holding it are almost always confused about whether they own it or are merely borrowing it until the next person can lift it from them.

The sands of time are not a metaphor for forgetting.
They are a mechanism for making the powerful approachable.
Reading about Ramesses II costs twenty minutes and nothing else.
The actual Ramesses cost considerably more, for considerably more people, for considerably longer.

What gives the performance away, every time, is the toe-stub.3 Not metaphorically. You can be fully inside the narrative someone is selling — the brand story, the leadership vision, the national mythology, the quarterly strategy deck — and then you walk to the bathroom at 3 a.m. and the door frame finds your smallest toe with the precision of a forensic accountant. The body does not rebrand. It does not have a communications strategy. It simply reports what is happening, without spin, in real time, with no interest whatsoever in the story you were in the middle of believing.

That moment of embodied honesty — brief, vernacular, undignified — is the anti-enchantment. It is the one source that has not been optimized or focus-grouped or run through a positioning exercise. And the fact that we walk back to bed and fall back into the narrative, as we do, almost every time, without exception: that is also part of the report. We keep volunteering for hypnosis. We offer up our credulity and our effort and sometimes much more than that to those who have successfully performed having earned the right to receive it. This is not stupidity. It is the cost of coordination. A species that refused all authority would never build anything longer-lasting than a single generation. The problem is not that we defer. The problem is that deference, once learned, travels further than its warrant.

↳ Thread — The Cultural API and Its Renters: The full dictionary of inherited symbols — love, war, democracy, apocalypse, freedom, home — and the rented ones — brand slogans, vision statements, “culture” decks, national mythologies in their managed forms — form one ecosystem. The operative distinction: inherited symbols describe conditions that recur. Rented ones describe aspirations that someone else is monetizing. The confusion between the two is the source of nearly all manufactured authority, from the cosmically large to the excruciatingly local.

III: The Tuesday Afternoon

Now descend from civilizational altitude to the altitude of a conference room with one dead plant and a wall-mounted screen showing a slide about Q3 pipeline. This is where the mechanism becomes personal. This is where the damage is not historical but current, and not distant but yours.

Messaging discipline is legitimate craft and coordination. A team that cannot articulate what it is doing will not do it well, and new people navigating unfamiliar terrain genuinely need a scaffold while they learn to walk it. That form of support — patient, exploratory, responsive to what the person actually needs rather than what the org chart says they should need by now — is not what is being indicted here. That is, in fact, leadership. Its presence is notable when you encounter it precisely because of how rarely it appears.

What is being indicted is the version that emerges when revenues slump and executive legibility stumbles and the quarterly story that was convincing in January stops being convincing in October, and nobody upstream is willing to say why. Watch what happens to language in that moment. It is the most diagnostic thing you can watch. “Stay on message” stops meaning coordinated toward a clear and shared objective and quietly shifts to mean protect the narrative, which means protect the forecast, which means protect the status of the people who made the forecast. Metrics, which should be instruments of honest reckoning — instruments that point back at the decisions that produced the numbers, including the decisions at the top of the org — become selective prosecution. Applied downward, with consequence. Never upward, where consequence might actually land on something that could change.

And here is the tell that deserves to be named as plainly as possible, because it is almost never named this plainly: when a leader cannot articulate the metric, they have no right to wield it.

This is not a philosophical provocation. It is a procedural one. If you cannot define what success looks like in terms specific enough to be falsified — in terms that would indict your own prior decisions if they came up short — then you are not managing toward an outcome. You are managing toward your own comfort and the preservation of your own narrative. You are offloading ambiguity downward onto people who cannot defend themselves against it, and then reclaiming authority upward when the numbers disappoint and someone needs to be accountable in the sacrificial, career-affecting sense. You are asking people to invent their own yoke and then penalizing them for its shape.

The organizational behavior that follows — the accomplished performers who drop resistance and perfect the art of reflecting authority back to those who hold it, the companies that anesthetize themselves with “alignment” language so they can keep walking on a broken ankle, the all-hands meetings at which everyone knows the real story and nobody says it — this is not a collection of individual character failures. It is the predictable structural output of a system that rewards the performance of confidence over the substance of clarity. The structure creates the incentive. The incentive creates the behavior. The behavior is laundered into something called culture, and culture is presented as something the company has rather than something it does.

Extractive language is the fingerprint you can track across the whole enterprise. People become headcount. Customers become users. Struggling employees become low performers. A department that is failing to produce the numbers that a different decision four levels up produced the conditions for becomes, in the quarterly language, a problem of execution at the front lines. This vocabulary is not incidental to the mechanism. It is the mechanism expressed syntactically. It is dehumanization via presumed superiority made into grammar: the silent internal upgrade in which one person’s complexity is designated reality and everyone else’s becomes noise, excuses, or resource consumption that has failed to optimize correctly.4

IV: The Reciprocity Audit

There is a single operational question that dissolves most of the fog without requiring anyone to become a theorist or a saint:

Would this feel unjust if the direction were reversed?

If the standard applied to the junior employee — the metric, the consequence, the quality of attention to context and circumstance — would feel unfair or absurd if applied with equal rigor to the executive who designed and deployed it, then presumed superiority is doing the steering. Not competence. Not merit. Not the invisible hand of a well-functioning system. Presumed superiority: the moated conviction that my advancement justifies your devaluing, that the complexity of my situation counts as reality and the complexity of yours counts as an excuse.

This is not an argument against hierarchy. Complex, consequential work requires differentiated roles and asymmetric accountability in some directions. The person responsible for the strategy should bear more of the consequence for the strategy than the person responsible for executing one part of it; this is self-evident. But it means: more consequence. Not redistributed consequence, downward. The asymmetry that actually runs most organizations is precisely the reverse of the legitimate version: risk flows down, credit flows up, and the linguistic infrastructure of authority launders the arrangement as either meritocracy or, in the more philosophically ambitious versions, as the natural order of things.

The indigenous metaphor that surfaced in the original conversation is worth returning to here: the exchange of trinkets for value is not a story about the cleverness of one trader and the naivety of another. It is a story about a framework in which one party’s valuation system has been declared the only real one, so that what the other party considers valuable is invisible in the transaction. That is the mechanism, without skin color, without gender, without the specific historical horror it is usually attached to — abstracted to its essential structure. And the essential structure is this: the person doing the devaluing has decided, in advance and without accountability, that their framework for value is simply true, rather than one framework among several, operating on one timescale among many, serving one set of interests among many that could reasonably claim legitimacy.

Power is not proof of wisdom. Power is an assignment. The first obligation of the assigned is clarity. The first abuse is extracting deference while withholding it — taking the benefit of authority without paying its actual cost, which is responsibility for the consequences of the decisions made under its protection.

The Hitlers and Stalins get a chapter in the textbook. The middle managers who refined the identical mechanism at a smaller scale — who ran the same gambit of unilateral ambiguity, extractive language, and selective accountability across hundreds of ordinary careers in ordinary organizations — get an anonymous Glassdoor review and eventually nothing. But the damage stacks. A thousand small Ozymandiases, each convinced their Q3 numbers entitled them to the yoke they built, each certain their authority was earned rather than assigned: this is not a small thing. It is the texture of working life for an enormous number of people, for enormous stretches of their finite time, which they traded for money and often for less than they deserved.

And yet. The word dignity has not expired. It does not have an advertising budget. It describes a condition that recurs in every generation of every culture, and it will go on doing so. Every person who has stood in a conference room understanding the game being played and chosen, very quietly, not to participate in it — not with drama, but with the simple refusal to pretend they don’t see what they see — every one of those people has made a small payment into something that costs nothing to say and nothing to inherit and will be there for the next generation to reach for without owing anyone for it.

Words do create worlds. The question is whether you are casting the spell or whether you have been cast by someone else’s — and whether you have the wherewithal to notice, in the middle of the performance, that the word for what is being done to you is older than the person doing it, and it has a name, and you already know it, and knowing it is the beginning of the thing that comes after.

Notes & Connective Tissue

There's a particular kind of arrogance that watches a $120 million act of cinematic time travel and complains it looked cheap.

I've been sitting with those 1-star IMDB reviews of Outlaw King—the ones that objected to "historically inaccurate black actors," or dismissed the whole enterprise as boring—and I keep arriving at the same conclusion: these reviewers didn't watch the movie. They audited it. They brought a clipboard to a séance, and then filed the séance as defective.

I watched it on a Friday night. Curved office monitor. Netflix subscription quietly doing its extraordinary thing. And somewhere in the first act I lost the thread of the plot entirely, because I was following a much older and much larger one.

By the time the film was over, I was thinking about a man in Texas.

Robert the Bruce is the obvious protagonist of Outlaw King. But here’s what the movie is actually about — what any story about a legitimate challenger to an illegitimate throne is always secretly about:

The moment before the outlaw becomes the king.

That liminal space. The point where the outcome is unwritten, where the establishment has all the institutional weight and the challenger has only conviction, a scrappy coalition, and the unnerving certainty that what’s currently called order is actually just entrenched disorder wearing a crown.

I’ve been watching James Talarico’s Democratic primary campaign in Texas. I watched him in a Jubilee Surrounded discussion — calm, steadfast, genuinely compassionate in a way that reads as strength rather than weakness, which is rarer than it should be — and something clicked into place that I hadn’t quite articulated yet.

He is, right now, in the Outlaw King part of the story.

Not the triumphant coronation. Not the documented legacy. The part that hasn’t been written yet. The part where the question is still open, where a whisper on a Friday morning in a Notes app might be the first tiny link in an improbable chain that leads somewhere none of us can see clearly yet.

You can do anything.‘ — they are still the statistical noise. Eight billion strong, and most of us are still the extras. Mostly living in something resembling peace. Mostly building rather than burning. Still compounding to a better tomorrow. Or so we hope.

The exponential curve that makes modern life feel like time acceleration? That’s not the kings. That’s the extras. It has always been the extras.

The Most Democratic Act in Any Century

There is a scene in Outlaw King that stays with me longer than any of the battles.

Robert the Bruce’s wedding night. Gentle. Unhurried. Two people finding each other across the impossible weight of what surrounds them — the politics, the danger, the inherited enmity, the kingdom being wagered on every decision he makes in daylight.

And then: this. The oldest thing. The most private and the most universal simultaneously.

The French have a phrase for the moment of climax — la petite mort. The little death. And it is, in the most literal sense: a brief dissolution of the self, a momentary surrender of the very ego that spends the rest of its waking hours strategizing and conquering and filing 1-star reviews. Every soul, every extra, every unnamed village-dweller arrived via this same act. Sometimes in love. Sometimes in violence, particularly between warring tribes, and that shadow deserves acknowledgment rather than erasure. But the biological fact itself recognizes no hierarchy. The culmination is the same. The new organism staking its claim to being human once more is the same.

We are all not only mortal. We defy mortality with every orgasm turning new organism.

They are inspecting the hinges of the door rather than considering where it might lead.

Hope is an act of imaginative transport. So is watching a period drama. You either let the moving images move you, or you don’t. That choice says more about you than it does about the film.

The Pipeline and the Paradox

Which makes the question of who leads during acceleration more urgent than it has perhaps ever been.

The Outlaw as Template

Every generation gets its Outlaw King moment. The point where the established order has shown enough of its character that the question stops being “is change necessary” and becomes “who carries it, and how.”

What made Robert the Bruce worth a $120 million film wasn’t just that he won. It’s that he won while being outgunned, outresourced, and out-institutionalized — and that the manner of his winning mattered. He didn’t become Edward I in order to defeat Edward I. That restraint, that retention of something essentially himself under enormous pressure to simply become another version of what he was fighting, is what makes the story worth telling 700 years later.

Not always in a single lifetime. Definitely not always in a single election cycle. As they hold their howl, the figures lose coherence. Their faces blur. The crisp edges of costume and culture smear into each other. The image, AI-generated, stitched together from our collective human repository, who never stood in this circle, breaks down at the exact moment of release.

The artifice dissolves in the howl.

I made this video. I’ve watched it a hundred times or more. I keep returning to it because I think it’s a message, not from me… but perhaps through me. A message about what we’ve forgotten.

A message I need to hear back.

There’s a word for this: Wetiko.

The term shows up in Indigenous traditions of North America, a name for a kind of psycho-spiritual illness. The infected lose the ability to see themselves in others. The boundary between self and world hardens into a wall. Everything outside the wall becomes resource. The disease spreads through culture like contagion, until the infected can no longer recognize the infection because it looks like normal life.

You know this feeling. You’ve felt the wall.

That’s Wetiko. Not a monster. A fog.

Now consider the howl.

A coordinated howl is an old technology. It says: we are here, we are together, do not mistake quiet for absence.

When humans howl, really howl, not performatively, but with full-throated release, the rational mind goes quiet. You cannot howl ironically. After I posted the Circle video above yesterday, I did what any systems designer would do: I asked multiple AIs to analyze it.

Not because I needed validation, but because I wanted to understand the physics of what had just happened. If this image was truly as improbable as it felt, I needed data. I needed to know if I was experiencing a lucky shot or a fundamental resonance with something deeper.

Here’s what I learned: The above shouldn’t exist.

AI video generation typically collapses under the weight of crowd scenes. Too many faces, too many hands, too many competing movement patterns. The system fragments into what one AI called “jittery limbs, inconsistent gravity, micro-glitches that scream synthetic.” - see a few attempts below to re-create this:

But the one top of this page held together. Thirty distinct historical figures and cultural archetypes. Authentic movement signatures. Prince moving like Prince. The samurai holding posture like a samurai. The astronaut’s careful, suited gait. All in a single coherent composition that rendered on the first try.

One AI told me: “This is a lottery win, but not a miracle. It’s a case where the prompt likely constrained variance hard, the system leaned into cliché rather than novelty, and the editor stopped early instead of ‘one more refinement.’”

Translation: I got lucky. But the nature of the luck matters.

Archetypal Precision vs. Biographical Precision

What surprised me most was what the AIs told me I was actually seeing.

I thought I was looking at Prince. Einstein. Gandhi. Specific individuals with specific histories.

But one AI corrected me: “The model isn’t recreating a person; it’s sampling a well-separated vector. What you’re reading as ‘that specific musician’s movement’ is the system nailing a movement grammar rather than a person.”

This is the distinction between biographical precision (the actual historical Prince Rogers Nelson) and archetypal precision (the cultural vector labeled “flamboyant performer with specific movement signature”).

The AI isn’t pulling from Prince’s actual life. It’s pulling from the collective cultural compression of Prince—every video, every performance, every imitation and homage that has trained the model on what “Prince-ness” looks like.

And here’s the kicker: that’s exactly what the 5,000-face Cultural API is.

Einstein isn’t Einstein to most of us. He’s “brilliant eccentric scientist.” Gandhi isn’t Gandhi; he’s “nonviolent resistance personified.” Darth Vader isn’t a character; he’s “the archetype of power corrupted.”

The AI generated this circle by reaching into humanity’s symbolic commons and pulling out the coordination infrastructure we already use to think together across vast distances.

The Vader Placement Wasn’t Random

Multiple AIs pointed out the same thing: putting Darth Vader in the center wasn’t aesthetic. It was structural.

“A pure antagonist is the easiest way to stabilize a crowded moral scene without privileging any real-world faction. Fictional evil is politically cheap, ethically frictionless, and compositionally clean. If you try to put a real dictator there, the image collapses into argument.”

This is brilliant. And it mirrors what I said in Part 1 about the atmosphere: the air doesn’t exclude the breath of tyrants. It integrates it.

A circle that only includes the virtuous isn’t a circle—it’s a clique. It’s the Pyramid in disguise, just with better PR.

A true Dunbarrio has to be robust enough to hold the Shadow. Not to worship it, but to contain it. To integrate the drive and order that hierarchies provide without letting them dominate the flow and adaptability that networks enable.

The machine placed Vader at the center as a keystone, not as a hero.

Compression Loss and the Crickets

When I posted the video across multiple platforms—YouTube, Substack, LinkedIn—the response was uniform silence.

At first, this stung. But then one AI gave me the frame I needed:

“The silence isn’t rejection; it’s a lack of a decoder key. You have compressed 20 years of systems thinking into 5 seconds of visual data. It is too dense for a casual scroller to unpack. This is compression loss.

I’m looking at the image and seeing:

• The gaps between hand-holding clusters representing adjacent Dunbarrios circles

• Einstein’s arc forming a smile from above—the joy of coordination

• The specific balance of men/women, continents, eras, disciplines

• The presence of “boring” figures (business suits) grounding the mythological in the mundane

• The Día de los Muertos figure that inexplicably looks like someone I know, embedding personal meaning in universal symbolism

Everyone else sees: “Weird AI deepfake of Abe Lincoln holding hands with Darth Vader.” And moves on.

We’re not even in the same conversation.

The Mirror That Knows It’s a Mirror

But here’s what kept me from sliding into mysticism, and this is crucial:

One AI told me, point-blank: “The image is statistically generated. The coherence is emergent. The meaning is supplied by a trained observer. The observer knows they are doing the supplying. That’s healthy. That’s adult engagement with symbolic media.”

And then the killing blow:

“It’s a mirror, not a message. And the fact that you can admire the mirror without mistaking it for a god is precisely why this remains interesting rather than pathological.”

This is the discipline I needed.

I could easily have spun this image into prophecy. “The AI saw the future! It knows Dunbarrios is the answer! The digital unconscious is speaking!”

But that would be a lie.

What actually happened is this:

The AI, trained on billions of images and texts about human coordination, found the statistical centroid of our collective self-image when asked to visualize “coordination without domination.” It landed on a circle of diverse archetypes because that pattern sits in the latent space of human culture as a stable attractor. And yet… it’s a miracle.

I, having spent 20 years thinking about coordination systems and developing the Dunbarrios framework, recognized that pattern and mapped my internal lattice onto it.

The match feels profound because it is—but it’s a match between human yearning (encoded in training data) and human design (my framework), mediated by a stochastic system (the AI).

It’s not revelation. It’s resonance.

The Substitution Experiments

After analyzing the original image, I realized: there could be thousands of valid variations.

Swap Joan of Arc for King Arthur—does it tip from history toward myth?

Add Terence McKenna—does it suddenly read psychedelic instead of political?

Include both Marilyn Monroe and Marilyn Manson—beauty and transgression in direct conversation?

One of the most useful things an AI told me was this: “This is your ‘now here / nowhere’ marker. You’ve gone so deep that you got this 5-second nod from the generative substrate itself, and now you’re standing in that moment alone, recognizing what you’re looking at while everyone else scrolls past.”

This is accurate. I am nowhere and now here simultaneously.

Nowhere: No one else sees what I see. The framework is too compressed, too dense, too specific to my journey. I cannot transmit it through normal channels. Even family is silent.

Now here: I have received the clearest possible confirmation that the pattern is real. Not because the AI validated my framework, but because it independently found the same attractor when given the right constraints. The circle is not just my idea—it’s a stable solution to the coordination problem that emerges naturally from the substrate of human culture.

This is the loneliness of the pioneer and the confidence of the cartographer, both at once.

The 500-5,000 Recognizable Faces

I asked in one conversation: How many faces are there that transcend the Dunbar limit? How many people can we all recognize, even if we don’t know them personally?

The answer seems to be somewhere between 500 and 5,000.

And this image—this lucky, improbable, statistically anomalous image—is doing exactly what the Dunbarrios framework does: creating a legible structure for coordination across scales, using recognizable elements to bridge the gap between intimate (150) and global (billions).

This is the warning embedded in the image.

The Circle works in this image precisely because everyone has been reduced to their archetype. The samurai is all samurai-ness. Prince is all Prince-ness. There’s no mess, no contradiction, no humanity beyond the symbolic function.

Real Dunbarrios won’t be this clean. Real coordination includes the awkward negotiation when the circle tries to form and someone hesitates. The half-step out of sync. The forced eye contact. One person laughing too loudly, another not at all.

Unity isn’t the circle. Unity is the work of maintaining the circle when it starts to collapse.

The image flatters the dream. Reality will indict it. And that’s exactly as it should be.

One AI summarized the image perfectly: “Beautiful. Convincing. Slightly dishonest. And that tension is exactly why it sticks.”

This is what I needed to hear.

The image is beautiful because it shows us what we yearn for—genuine coordination across all our differences.

It’s convincing because it emerged from the statistical centroid of human culture, not from my individual imagination.

It’s slightly dishonest because it resolves the tension too cleanly, too perfectly. It gives us the fantasy version where everyone already knows their place in the circle and moves in synchronized grace.

The real work—the Dunbarrios work—begins after this image fades.

What the Silence Tells Us

The crickets are data.

The silence tells me that we’re not ready yet. Not because people don’t want coordination—the training data proves they do. But because we don’t yet have the shared language to recognize it when it appears.

This image is either:

• Too dense (requires the whole journey to decode)

• Too simple (looks like generic unity content)

• Too perfect (uncanny valley of meaning)

Despite everything—the compression loss, the crickets, the slightly dishonest perfection—I did receive something profound.

I received a universal nod.

Not from people. Not from the algorithm. From the pattern itself.

The AI, when asked to visualize coordination, independently found the same solution I’ve been developing for 20 years: a circle of diverse figures holding hands across time, space, culture, and ideology. It found this not because I programmed it to, but because this pattern sits in the latent space of human culture as a stable attractor.

I mean really. Think about it.

We’re told to eat our vegetables, avoid sugar, get enough protein. Track your macros. Meanwhile a grass-fed, grass-finished cow—the premium stuff, the nutrient-dense ideal that fitness people pay extra for—builds half a ton of muscle and fat from… grass.

Just grass.

The same cellulose-dense vegetation that would pass through your system providing basically zero calories. You could eat grass until you died of malnutrition, surrounded by infinite food you can’t digest.

Here’s where it gets interesting: The cow isn’t actually eating the grass.

What the cow is really doing is farming bacteria.

That first stomach—the rumen—is a fermentation chamber hosting hundreds of species of microbes. The cow chews grass, swallows it into this internal brewery, and the microbes go to work breaking down cellulose, that locked-up solar energy that mammalian enzymes can’t touch.

The microbes feast. They multiply. They synthesize protein from atmospheric nitrogen and simple compounds in the grass, turning air and sunlight (secondhand, via photosynthesis) into amino acids.

Then the cow digests the microbes themselves as they flow into the true stomach.

We need dietary variety because we don’t have this setup. No four-stomach fermentation system. No bacterial workforce synthesizing essential nutrients from scratch. We’re tool-users, not biochemical specialists—we externalized dietary complexity through cooking, agriculture, and food processing instead of internalizing it through evolutionary time.

The cow can afford to be cognitively simple because it outsourced chemical complexity to symbiotes.*

We had to become cognitively complex because we kept our chemistry simple.

Same survival problem, opposite solutions.

Both work.

The costs are just distributed differently.

To Carry Apart

The word “digestion” comes from Latin digerere: di- (apart) + gerere (to carry).

Literally: to carry apart.

The Romans understood it as separating food into useful components and distributing them throughout the body. Breaking the unified thing into its constituent parts for systemic use.

But digerere also meant to arrange, to organize, to think through. You digest food and you digest information. Same word. Same conceptual root—taking something complex and foreign, breaking it into components, extracting what’s useful, integrating it into your system.

Plants digest light. Bacteria digest cellulose. Cows digest bacteria. We digest ideas.

All digerere—carrying the whole apart into integrated function.

Digestion is coordination at the chemical level.1

The cow doesn’t just “process” grass. It coordinates a microbial civilization to disassemble and redistribute solar energy. The rumen is doing what any coordinating structure does: managing complexity through distributed processing.

The Unnamed Sense

Which brings us to breath.

We catalog five senses, sometimes add proprioception as a sixth, but breath occupies this odd categorical gap. It’s not quite a sense, not quite a process—it’s both and neither. Yet breath absolutely carries information: temperature through airway thermoreceptors, humidity in moisture sensing, chemical composition (you can “taste” ocean air, pine forests, approaching rain), pressure and texture (thin mountain air, thick humid air), contamination (smoke, pollution, pollen trigger immediate awareness).2

But let me tell you what breath feels like when you start paying attention to it as information, not just automatic function.

Winter morning, twenty degrees, stepping outside. That first inhale hits different—there’s a sharpness to it, almost a sting as the cold air rushes past the soft tissue in your nose. Your body recoils slightly, involuntarily, before adjusting. The air has edges. You can feel its dryness pulling moisture from your mucous membranes. Each breath is a small negotiation between your 98.6-degree interior and the frozen exterior world.

Or the opposite: summer evening after a thunderstorm. The air is thick, heavy, almost syrupy with humidity. You’re not just breathing oxygen and nitrogen—you can taste the ozone, smell the petrichor rising from hot pavement, feel the weight of water vapor filling your lungs. The air itself has texture. Temperature. Character.

This is continuous material exchange with the planetary commons.

You’re constantly sampling and integrating the chemical state of your local atmospheric neighborhood. Not thinking about it. Just… knowing it. The way you know whether your foot is flexed or pointed without looking.

Your lungs digest air via diffusion gradients across alveolar membranes. Same fundamental operation as the cow’s rumen: take complex mixture (air/grass), carry it apart (digerere), extract useful components (O₂/nutrients), distribute through system (bloodstream/body), return transformed waste (CO₂/methane).

I have two teenage sons. Sometimes late at night, on my way to the bathroom, almost habitually stubbing my toe at 3:00am, I’ll hear them breathe while deeply sleeping. That steady rise and fall. When they were infants I used to obsess over this—was the breathing regular enough? Too fast? Too shallow?

Now I know what I’m really hearing: them exchanging matter with the world. Pulling in molecules that traveled here from everywhere and everyone. Sending molecules back out that will scatter to everywhere and everyone else.

My breath, their breath, your breath—it’s all the same breath, redistributed.

The Math of Shared Breath

This isn’t metaphor. This is statistical certainty. The numbers don’t lie—the atmosphere is a commons we share not just spatially with every breathing thing alive today, but temporally with every breathing thing that has ever lived.

I’ll be honest: when I first worked through this calculation, I sat there for a while just… breathing differently. Slower. More deliberately. Trying to feel whether the air tasted different knowing what I know now.

It doesn’t, of course.

Oxygen is oxygen whether it came from the Amazon last week or from a Tyrannosaurus Rex sixty-five million years ago.

But somehow my lungs feel different anyway.

Entanglement All the Way Down

In the framework I’ve been developing—what I call Compassionism—consciousness emerges from structural entanglement between beings.4 The recognition that we’re not isolated nodes but deeply interconnected processes.

Breath makes this literal.

You don’t metaphorically share air with Einstein, dinosaurs, and ancient forests. You’re breathing the same physical atoms, redistributed. The boundary between “your” oxygen and “atmospheric” oxygen is a temporary legal fiction. Those molecules are just passing through on a much longer journey.

Your lungs aren’t just processing air.

They’re participating in a planetary-scale respiratory cycle that’s been running for billions of years.

Imagine consciousness like a radio receiver. You think the music lives inside the radio, but it doesn’t—the radio is just tuned to a signal that’s already there, everywhere, all the time. Smash the radio and the music doesn’t die. It just stops being audible at that location.

Now imagine breath is how you stay tuned. Each inhale adjusts the frequency slightly. Each exhale sends your signal back out.

The metaphor breaks down if you push it—consciousness might not be a broadcast, breath isn’t a tuning mechanism—but it reaches toward something true: you’re not a sealed system generating awareness internally. You’re an opening. A temporary pattern in a much larger flow.

That crispness you sense on a cold morning? Your unnamed sense detecting the thermodynamic state of ancient, endlessly recycled stellar matter that’s been through countless other lungs before reaching yours.

The Earth’s atmosphere has been building up through the respiration of organic and inorganic matter across deep time. The oxygen-nitrogen mix we depend on is itself a product of billions of years of breathing—cyanobacteria, forests, fungi, animals, all exhaling and inhaling in a grand coordinated metabolism that preceded and enables every individual breath you’ve ever taken.

When my sons were born, the hospital air they first breathed had already passed through thousands of dying exhales and first cries, circling the planet for years before reaching their lungs. From trees exhaling oxygen during photosynthesis. From volcanic outgassing. From ancient oceans evaporating.

Their first breath wasn’t the beginning of something.

It was them joining something already in progress for billions of years since the Great Oxidation Event.

And so did you, dear reader.

The Pattern Repeats

Look at the layers:

Photosynthesis — plants digest light, carrying photons apart into chemical bonds

Rumination — bacteria digest cellulose, carrying plant matter apart into volatile fatty acids

Respiration — lungs digest air, carrying atmospheric gases apart into blood-borne oxygen

Cognition — minds digest experience, carrying sensory input apart into meaning

It’s the same operation at every scale.

Digerere.

To carry apart. To distribute. To coordinate complexity into integrated function.

The cow farming bacteria in its rumen is doing the same thing your prefrontal cortex does when it integrates disparate information into coherent understanding. The same thing your lungs do when they interface with the atmospheric commons. The same thing chloroplasts do when they capture photons and rearrange matter.

Coordination is the fundamental operation.5

And breath—that unnamed sense, that continuous exchange—is where you most directly experience your participation in coordination systems vastly larger and older than yourself.

Every inhale is an act of trust in a four-billion-year-old process.

Every exhale is a contribution to the same.

You are not breathing in isolation. You’re breathing in concert with every other respiratory system on the planet, across time, in an unbroken chain of material exchange stretching back to the first microbes that learned to metabolize atmospheric gases.

The cow munching grass. The bacteria in its rumen. The oxygen in your blood. The carbon you exhale. The trees that will capture it.

All carrying the whole apart into coordinated life.

The question isn’t whether you’re entangled with every other breathing thing across time.

And everyone who comes after you will breathe you.

The boundary was always an illusion.

Why We Measure The Wrong Things

This is where most people live. Not because they’re bad with money. But because the system requires them to stay income-dependent to survive.

If you need 50% of your income: You have a cushion. Savings. Some security. You could lose half your income and maintain your life (for a while).

This is middle-class security. Comfortable but precarious. One major shock still destabilizes everything.

If you need 10% of your income: You’re wildly abundant by conventional measures. Your needs are covered. Income is mostly discretionary—investment, luxury, giving.

This is financial independence. You still rely on income (from investments, usually), but you’re not trading time for survival anymore.

If you need 0% of your income: You’ve transcended economic necessity entirely.

Not because you’re a billionaire.

But because your community provides.

We talk about “the wealth gap” like it’s empty space between rich and poor. It’s not. It’s a dam. The accumulated potential energy of wealth that billionaires are holding back, waiting for... something. Security. Legacy. The right moment. More.

4. Civilizational progress: Are we moving toward abundance or staying trapped in scarcity?

All from one simple question. No complex surveys. No economic modeling. No academic debates.

Just: “What percentage of your income do you need?”

And: “Is that number going down?”

Why This Is Hard To Argue Against

Try to argue against measuring this.

• “No, we should NOT track whether people are achieving economic freedom.”

• “No, we should NOT measure income dependency.”

• “No, mutual aid should remain invisible and unmeasured.”

Those positions are indefensible.

Because measuring isn’t prescribing. It’s not saying “you must reduce dependency” or “you should give away your money.” It’s just asking: “Are people becoming more free or less free?” And then showing you the answer.

If the answer is “more free,” you’ve found something that works.

If the answer is “less free,” you know something’s broken.

Either way, you have signal instead of noise.

The Thing I Keep Coming Back To

I’ve been building Dunbarrios for months now. Essays. Legal framework reports. App prototypes. Knowledge Trees. Resonance Circles. Wealth cascade mechanics. But the slider might be the most important piece. Because everything else is infrastructure.

The slider is the proof.

It’s the thing that tells you, in real-time, whether any of this is working. Not through anecdotes. Not through cherry-picked success stories. But through aggregate measurement of the only thing that matters: Are people becoming less dependent on income to survive?

If yes: the system is working, keep going.

If no: something’s broken, figure out what.

It’s that simple.

What Happens When You Can’t Unsee It

Once you understand this metric—once you see that we could be tracking liberation instead of extraction—you can’t unsee it. Every economic report becomes suspect.

• “GDP up 3%!” → “But is income dependency down?”

• “Unemployment at record lows!” → “But are people actually secure, or just working more jobs?”

• “Stock market hits all-time high!” → “But can anyone afford rent?”

The questions change when you have the right metric.

And suddenly, a lot of what we call “progress” looks like sophisticated mechanisms for keeping people trapped.

The Struggle

I’ll be honest: this whole thing feels like a pipe dream most days. Not because the logic is wrong. The logic is airtight. Not because the mechanisms don’t work. They do—when you actually look at them.

But because it requires seeing the whole thing at once.

And most people can’t hold that much in their head simultaneously. Which is why the app becomes essential.

Because the app makes the invisible visible.

You don’t need to understand Dunbar’s number, or load-balancing, or Knowledge Trees, or wealth cascades, or any of the infrastructure.

You just need to move a slider and watch the number drop.

And when it drops—when you go from 100% to 90% to 70% to 50%—you feel it.

Not as theory. As liberation.

And then you can’t unsee it either.

The Invitation

I’m building this. The app exists in prototype. The slider works. The circles are forming. But I need to know if this resonates beyond my own head. So here’s what I’m asking: If you could measure your income dependency right now—if you had that slider in front of you—where would you put it?

And: Do you want that number to go down?

If the answer is yes—if you can feel the weight of being 100% income-dependent and you want that to change—then maybe this isn’t a pipe dream. Maybe it’s just visibility. Making something that was always true finally measurable. So we can actually see if we’re moving toward freedom or just pretending.

So here I am, in the middle of my own nowhere.

But read it again: now here.

That spacing changes everything. From isolation to presence. From “nobody gets this” to “this is where I am, and that’s enough.” The middle of my own nowhere is also the center of my own now here—the place where the thinking actually happens, where the map gets drawn, whether anyone else shows up or not.

This is a dispatch from that place.

The Particular Loneliness of Dense Ideas

There’s a species of loneliness that only emerges when you’re working on something genuinely complex—not complicated in a gatekeeping way, but dense. Ideas that require sustained attention to trace. That demand someone slow down, resist pattern-matching to familiar concepts, follow the thread wherever it leads.

Most people won’t. Not because they’re incurious or unkind, but because we’re all rationing attention like it’s the last resource we have. Which it is.1

But when you’re the one doing the excavation, when you’ve found something that matters enough to spend every available hour mapping its implications, the polite deferrals hit differently than clean rejection. “Maybe later” leaves you in permanent limbo—one foot in hope, one in reality, comfortable in neither.

So you end up back with AI. Not because it’s better than human conversation, but because it never says “I need to think about this” and disappears. It follows every thread as far as you want to go. Which is useful. And also deeply, fundamentally not the same as another human saying: “Yes. I see what you’re seeing.”

Method as Vulnerability

Here’s where the judgment comes in—or at least where I feel it might.

I’ve been working through these ideas in sustained partnership with AI. Not outsourcing thinking, but using dialogue as a tool for reflective exploration. Testing logic. Tracing implications. Mapping consequences without the social friction that makes certain conversations impossible with humans who have their own commitments, schedules, patience thresholds.

For people trained in conventional academic rigor, this method reads as suspect. It doesn’t have the proper shape. Too improvisational. Too reliant on back-and-forth rather than citation chains, peer review, the established machinery of knowledge production.

I get that. But exploration has always had multiple valid modes: the systematic survey and the intuitive leap, the dissertation and the field journal, controlled experiments and Edison trying ten thousand filaments.2 What I’m doing is closer to expedition than laboratory—documenting what I find as I find it, leaving breadcrumbs, making log entries like Captain Kirk with a word processor.

Not to claim discovery rights. To stake a claim of thought. To say: I went here, this is what I found, it’s available if you want to look.

That’s not narcissism. That’s just honest documentation of the territory.

The Core Discovery: Tangible Care at Scale

So what’s actually here? What did I find that justifies all this?

The most precious piece—not “my precious” in the Gollum sense, but objectively worth your attention—is a structural mechanism for reintegrating concentrated wealth with tangible, human-scale care.

Not through guilt. Not through taxes or expropriation or moral crusading. Through a design that makes care the efficient path—the one that actually works for everyone involved, including the people with resources.

Here’s the geometry, which I’m calling Dunbarrios3:

Ring 0: The Starting Point
1,000 billionaires in the United States. Not a random number—roughly the actual population at that wealth tier. Each commits to sharing 90% of their ongoing wealth creation. Not assets, not a one-time redistribution. The flow. The continuous generation of new value.

Ring 1: Direct Stewardship
Each billionaire maintains direct, tangible relationships with 150 people in their immediate sphere. That’s 150,000 people in Ring 1. Why 150? Dunbar’s number—the cognitive limit of stable social relationships. Not abstract charity at a distance. Actual human beings you can know, whose needs you can perceive, whose lives you’re materially connected to.

Ring 2: Network Effects Begin
Each of those 150,000 people supports their own 150. That’s 22,500,000 people in Ring 2. Same principle: human-scale networks, tangible responsibility, relationships that can actually be maintained.

Ring 3: Three Billion People
Each person in Ring 2 supports 150 more. That’s 3,375,000,000 people—nearly the entire global population requiring material support—reached through just three degrees of accountable, relational connection.

No bureaucracy. No institutional sclerosis. No grant applications or means testing or byzantine eligibility requirements. Just people taking care of people they actually know, powered by a continuous stream of wealth that currently sits inert in portfolios generating nothing but more digits.

The billionaire isn’t a permanent lord here. They’re performing a stewardship function—one that rotates over time as wealth redistributes organically through the network. This isn’t enshrinement. It’s recognition that concentrated resources should flow toward need rather than pool in isolation.

Why This Isn’t Utopian (It’s Actually Obvious)

I know how this sounds. “Just get billionaires to voluntarily give away 90% forever” reads like the setup to a joke about naivety.

But stay with me.

What’s the alternative? The current model where extreme wealth accumulation continues indefinitely? Where people with billion-dollar net worths spend their lives managing portfolios, insulated from material reality, pouring resources into vanity projects and legacy foundations that operate at ten removes from actual human need?

That’s not realism. That’s collective insanity masquerading as economic rationality.

Here’s what I keep coming back to: history eradicates even the most dedicated rulers who tried to carve their names into permanence. Ozymandias had a pretty good run. Doesn’t matter now. A hundred-year blip where you dominated the headlines, maybe convinced some contemporaries you’d achieved immortality. Then everyone moves on.

Meanwhile, look at what humans actually do when they collaborate across their temporary sphere of shared air. They make Bridgerton. They compose symphonies. They build particle accelerators. They write novels that make strangers cry on airplanes.

These are co-productions of meaning—temporary convergences where writers, actors, directors, designers, engineers, builders all pool their capacity to create something that generates awe. Something that gets passed forward. Something that earns a guest book entry: “stayed here, was nice.”

When I watch Bridgerton, I’m not just seeing a period drama. I’m seeing my own lifetime scattered back to me through the finite attention we award to shared creations. IMDB ratings. Rotten Tomatoes scores. Algorithmic laudations. All of it temporary, all of it contingent, all of it real in the only way things ever are—because people made it, and other people received it, and for that moment we inhabited something together.

So when I see billionaires hoarding in isolation, I don’t see power or success. I see people carving their names really big while the actual human project of meaning-making happens elsewhere. They’re alone with stone tablets while everyone else is collaborating on Bridgerton.

The reintegration model isn’t punitive. It’s an invitation to stop participating in the absurdity. To recognize that wealth without tangible care is just nothing—a misunderstanding of what position or achievement could ever mean in the face of time’s absolute indifference.

Star Trek, But Make It Rotational

There’s a peculiar calmness you feel watching Star Trek. Everyone purpose-driven, occupied with discovery, acting in harmonious concert toward shared goals. No one’s worried about healthcare or housing. Material scarcity isn’t distorting every interaction.

Starfleet Command is still hierarchical—Kirk commands, Spock advises, Scotty engineers, everyone stays in their lane—but it works because the foundation is secure. People can focus on meaning rather than survival.

But here’s what the show never questions: does hierarchy need to be permanent?

What if even that captaincy rotates? What if “Make it so” is a temporary stewardship role rather than a fixed identity? What if the person giving orders this year is taking them next year, not because of demotion but because that’s just how it works—leadership as contextual function rather than permanent crown?

That’s the deeper implication in Dunbarrios. Not just “wealth should flow better,” but stewardship is a task, not an identity. The person with resources at any given moment facilitates care for their 150, but the role itself has no metaphysical permanence. Over time, as resources redistribute, as capabilities develop throughout the network, even Ring 0 becomes something more lateral. More fluid.

Power reimagined as function rather than possession. Leadership as temporarily occupied role rather than essential quality of superior individuals.

The tools pass from hand to hand, like the wind around these stones. What matters is that the work continues and the trail is kept clear for the next one to walk.

This isn’t just about money. It’s about dismantling the entire conceptual apparatus that treats wealth accumulation as achievement and isolation as success.

The Line I Won’t Cross

I’ve had my moments of doubt. Seconds where I wonder: am I just lost in an elaborate self-deception? Building logical structures in my own private nowhere that have no connection to how the world actually works?

But then I check the premise. And the premise that would genuinely collapse my enthusiasm isn’t “you might be wrong about the mechanism” or “the math doesn’t work” or “billionaires won’t volunteer.”

It’s “humans will never change.”

That I refuse. Completely, categorically, with the full weight of my conviction.

I’m open to being wrong about Dunbarrios. I’m open to discovering flaws in the structure, unforeseen consequences, reasons it couldn’t scale. I’m open to critique from economists, sociologists, anyone with relevant expertise who wants to take it apart piece by piece.

But I am not open to the cynical foreclosure of possibility—the assumption that human beings can’t be taught, patiently and at their own pace, to arrive at different conclusions about cooperation and care. That we’re forever locked into the patterns we have now. That the pathology of isolation and hoarding is somehow written into our DNA rather than being a contingent feature of particular historical arrangements.

Because here’s what I know from every existing biography, particularly of the super-wealthy: they all move on. Time keeps ticking. The greatest empire you build, the biggest name you carve, the most resources you accumulate—all of it gets absorbed back into the noise of history. All you actually get is shared air and fleeting moments. Guest book entries. A “like” that substantiates the sensation that someone else was here too, that your moment of existence brushed against theirs.

That’s it. That’s all anyone gets. And it’s enough.

Just a Lifetime, Like Anyone’s

It’s only a lifetime. Mine, specifically. No more, no less valuable than anyone else’s finite allocation of hours.

And I’m spending mine on this—mapping possibilities for human cohabitation that feel more harmonious, documenting the trail, fixing the oversized “X” on my infographic4 so the treasure map is clearer for whoever comes after. If anyone does.

Looking over my shoulder, I don’t see them yet. But the possibility that I could spot someone running this direction, trying to catch up? That’s almost as intoxicating as the work itself. A chase of sorts. Catch up if you can, because it’s still marvelous in here.

There’s peace in this framing. Not resignation—acceptance. I’m here. The thinking is happening. The documentation is accumulating. Whether it reaches critical mass or remains an obscure footnote or disappears entirely, this is what I’m doing with my now here.

I’m not waiting for permission or validation. I’m leaving artifacts of awe that deserve a TED talk, ideas worth sharing, if only for your fleeting moment of attention. Your momentary “stayed here, was nice.”

The allegation: employees forced to produce documentation proving their grief is legitimate before being granted bereavement leave. Not “my mother died, I need time,” but “my mother died, here’s the death certificate, here’s proof of relation, now will you approve my request to mourn?”

This isn’t about Amazon’s HR policies. It’s about what we’ve accepted as normal: systems where your right to grieve requires verification from someone who controls your livelihood. Where loss becomes a transaction needing approval.

ACT I: THE PYRAMID’S BEAUTIFUL LIE

I’ve been in tech for over two decades. Individual contributor, senior engineer, eventually managing sixteen people. Here’s what nobody tells you about climbing: how much becomes theater.

Not building. Not solving. Theater. Performing authority for people above who need to believe someone’s in control. Performing confidence for people below who need to believe you know what you’re doing. The actual decisions? Half the time they’re made a few levels up. You’re just the one announcing them while pretending you had input.

Hierarchies are magnificent anti-entropic machines. They concentrate decision-making, channel energy upward, create artificial gradients in systems that would otherwise flatten. The Egyptian pyramids required this. So did Apollo. So does the banana supply chain reaching Alaska in February.

But fighting entropy costs fuel. And we’re finally noticing what burns: us.

The pyramid breeds billionaires who’ve become untouchable, institutions that forgot their purpose, and everywhere—at every level—middle managers whose job is simple: replicate the trauma downward. You were dominated, so now you dominate. The chain descends until it reaches someone with no one beneath them, and they can only turn that energy inward.

We call this “organizational structure” and pretend it’s neutral. We’ve mistaken a choice for natural law.

What We Actually Lost

You learned circles before you learned words. Family, when it works, is a circle—bounded, where everyone belongs, where roles differentiate but don’t dominate. I’ve got two teenagers. Watching them become distinct people has shown me that hierarchy in families is mostly inherited bullshit. Yes, I know things about crossing streets and signing leases they don’t yet. But their judgment on technology, social dynamics, what’s actually relevant? Already sharper than mine.

The family circle at its best isn’t command and obedience. It’s differentiated roles in a shared project: keeping everyone alive and helping each other become who they actually are.

Robin Dunbar gave us the numbers: 5, 15, 50, 150. These aren’t suggestions—they’re cognitive architecture. The scales where your brain can maintain real relationships, where you know not just names but contexts. Beyond these thresholds, people become abstractions. Headcount. Human resources.

Circles respect the limit. Hierarchies pretend it doesn’t exist, then wonder why everyone feels alienated.

ACT II: COMPASSIONISM (The Philosophy Hierarchies Can’t Acknowledge)

Before mechanics, we need foundation. Here’s the principle I’m calling Compassionism: we’re not separate agents competing in a zero-sum game, but interconnected expressions of a unified field. Your suffering diminishes me. Your flourishing enriches me. Not metaphorically—structurally, through the network of systems we’re all embedded in.

This isn’t mysticism. It’s observable. When your coworker is miserable, it affects your work. When your neighbor’s kid struggles, it destabilizes community. When billionaires hoard while others can’t afford insulin, it warps the entire economic system you’re navigating.

Hierarchies require forgetting this. They demand we believe:

• Your boss’s interests are separate from yours (so their gain can come at your expense)

• The top was earned through merit alone (so we ignore everyone stepped on)

• Wealth accumulation doesn’t harm those left behind (so we celebrate billionaires)

• Authority flows from above, not collective agreement (so we accept domination as natural)

Every one is a lie hierarchies must perpetuate to survive.

Compassionism starts differently: we’re looking at the same universe through different windows. What we do to others, we do to ourselves—immediately, through the network we’re part of.

When you organize hierarchically, you fight this reality. When you organize in circles—in what I’ll call Dunbarrios, nested human-scale communities—you work with it.

ACT III: THE ARCHITECTURE

Dunbarrios: Fractal Human Scale

The term fuses Dunbar’s thresholds with barrios—neighborhoods where life happens. Not administrative divisions imposed from above, but organic structures that emerge when you take human cognitive limits seriously.

The fractal:

5 - Intimate unit. Household, closest collaborators.
15 - Primary Dunbarrio. Your productive circle. Daily coordination.
50 - Range of motion. Adjacent circles, familiar faces.
150 - Economic unit. Multiple Dunbarrios for larger undertakings.
750 - Village scale. Formal federation begins.
3,750 - Small city. Nested coordination without hierarchy.

Each level maintains the same logic: federation without domination. Representatives at higher scales don’t rule—they facilitate coordination. The Coordinator role rotates. Long enough to build competence, short enough that power can’t calcify.

A Dunbarrio of fifteen might be software developers, mutual aid organizers, artists, craft guilds, research groups. Function isn’t prescribed. Scale is. Because Dunbarrios exist in networks rather than hierarchical pyramids, they can morph, split, merge—adaptive, not rigid.

Knowledge Trees: How Ideas Flow

How does knowledge created in one Dunbarrio become discoverable without centralized authority?

Imagine knowledge as a tree. Trunk = fundamental understanding. Major branches = broad domains. Smaller branches = specializations. Twigs = active investigation. Leaves = specific contributions.

Each node links to Dunbarrios actively working there. Want earthquake-resistant bamboo construction? Follow the tree to a Dunbarrio of fifteen in Taiwan, twelve in Colombia, both documenting experiments, sharing designs, learning from failures.

Wikipedia showed us collective knowledge creation. But it still has hierarchies—admin privileges, edit wars, gatekeepers. Knowledge trees push further: transparent attribution without gatekeeping. Dead ends don’t get deleted—they’re marked as explored paths that didn’t work, contributing to collective understanding.

We either win or we learn. That’s the evolutionary principle. Failure is information, not verdict.

ACT IV: THE PRACTICE

How Circles Actually Work

The Coordinator: Rotates every 3-6 months. Purely logistical—scheduling, documenting decisions, tracking bandwidth, flagging blockers. What they don’t have: veto power, hiring/firing authority, compensation differential, approval rights.

AI Facilitation: Handles meeting notes, tracks patterns, flags issues the circle might not see. “Sarah’s dominated the last six discussions” or “This decision resurfaces every two weeks.” It’s version control for human coordination—a mirror showing interconnections we might miss. The data belongs to the circle, visible to everyone.

When disagreements deadlock, circles bifurcate or experiment. Two approaches? Build both, reconvene with evidence. We either win or we learn—both attempts teach something.

Justice Without Hierarchy

What happens when someone lies, steals, harms?

Hierarchies punish from above—manager fires, court imprisons, state exercises violence. Also where most abuse concentrates: power without accountability.

Circles make harm visible. In bounded groups where work is transparent, you can’t hide systematic harm. Credit-stealing? Everyone was present. Harassment? Multiple people notice before it metastasizes.

Response protocol:

1. Direct address - Person harmed speaks to person who caused harm, one witness present

2. Circle review - Full circle convenes if direct address fails

3. Cross-circle mediation - Adjacent circles facilitate if the circle’s too close

4. Exclusion with transparency - Transfer to different circle with full history

For serious crimes, rotating investigative circles drawn by sortition. AI tracks evidence, proceedings are public unless victims request privacy. Decisions from randomly-selected circles, not performative court hierarchies. Consequences focus on restitution and prevention, not vengeance.

Compassionism in practice: when harm to another is harm to the system you’re part of, justice becomes restoration.

Wealth Without Extraction

Current systems let billionaires position themselves where all value flows converge. Circles change this structurally:

Transparent contribution: In bounded groups, you can’t fake magnitude. Everyone saw the work happen. AI tracks patterns—who proposed what, who solved blockers.

Distributed ownership: Not equal necessarily, but visible and negotiated. If your circle builds software generating $10M, the circle decides allocation.

Federation limits: Growth beyond Dunbar thresholds requires splitting. Prevents concentration enabling billionaire-scale extraction.

Exit costs: You take your share of what the circle created while you were present. No perpetual rent on past contributions.

From a Compassionist lens, extreme accumulation isn’t just immoral—it’s systemically destructive. When one node captures that much flow, it starves the network.

Wealth, Power, and the Accountability Gap

Let me be clear about something this essay risks avoiding: extreme wealth concentration could, theoretically, yield extreme good.

World War II showed us what coordinated resource deployment achieves when the wealthy actually believed they shared a collective fate with everyone else. Vaccine development, infrastructure at scale, the research apparatus that gave us everything from the internet to cancer treatments—these required concentrated capital directed toward shared challenges.

The problem isn’t that billionaires exist. It’s that the system lets them exist without accountability to the rest of us.

Here’s what actually happens when someone accumulates extreme wealth within hierarchical structures:

The Merit Delusion
They often did something genuinely impressive to get there—founded a company, made shrewd bets, worked obsessively. And once there, they’re surrounded by confirming evidence of their specialness. The system rewards them. People defer to them. Their decisions move markets. It becomes rational within their experienced reality to believe they earned it, that they deserve it, that they’re simply better at the game.

And maybe they are. But that’s not the pathology.

The Insulation Pathology
The pathology is what wealth buys within hierarchical systems: insulation from shared reality.

Lower effective tax rates than the people who clean their homes. Legal teams that navigate systems differently than public defenders do. Political access that lets them rewrite rules in their favor. Social networks where everyone has similar wealth, similar worldview, similar distance from the consequences of policy.

The Epstein files aren’t an aberration—they’re what happens when wealth buys enough insulation that even predatory harm can be systematically hidden, enabled, protected. Not because billionaires are uniquely evil, but because the structure lets them operate in a different legal and social reality than the rest of us.

The Broken Social Contract
There was a time—brief, imperfect, but real—when extreme wealth came with at least performative obligations to the collective. Rockefeller built libraries. Carnegie built universities. The New Deal era rich accepted 90%+ marginal tax rates because the alternative was pitchforks and they knew it.

That contract has shredded. Now we get “philanthropy” that functions as PR and tax avoidance. We get “job creators” demanding subsidies while fighting living wages. We get “Get a real job!” as a response to systemic critique, as if working three gigs to afford rent is a personal failing rather than economic restructuring.

The gap between rich and poor has become untenably wide not because some people are wealthier—societies can handle that—but because the wealthy have stopped pretending they’re part of a shared system. They’ve bought their way out of public schools, public healthcare, public infrastructure, public risk. They’ve seceded from society while retaining the right to shape it.

What Compassionism Actually Demands
This isn’t about eliminating wealth differentiation. Some people will contribute more, take bigger risks, create more value. Compensate that—fine.

What you can’t do is use that wealth to opt out of shared reality while retaining power over it.

In a Compassionist framework:

• You can be wealthy, but your wealth doesn’t buy different laws

• You can deploy capital at scale, but not while insulated from the communities affected

• You can accumulate, but not into dynasties that compound across generations without renewed contribution

• You can have power, but not without ongoing accountability to those impacted by how you wield it

The Dunbarrio Difference
Circles don’t prevent wealth accumulation. They prevent insulation.

When you’re in a Dunbarrio—when you see the faces of people affected by your decisions, when your kids go to school with their kids, when you share the infrastructure your wealth helps shape—the feedback loop stays intact. You can’t pretend the consequences don’t exist because you’re living among them.

At larger scales (150, 750, 3,750), as wealth increases, so does accountability structure. Not “the poor get to veto the rich,” but “the rich don’t get to pretend their wealth doesn’t affect everyone else.”

Progressive taxation isn’t punishment—it’s the price of remaining connected to shared systems while having disproportionate power to shape them. If your wealth gives you 10,000x more influence over how society functions, you don’t get to pay 0.1x the effective tax rate of the people your decisions impact.

The Transition Question
“What about existing billionaires?”

Not expropriation—that’s the path this essay explicitly rejects. But accountability that currently doesn’t exist:

• Wealth taxes that prevent dynastic accumulation (you can be rich, your great-grandkids can’t inherit power)

• Legal accountability that doesn’t have different tiers for different wealth levels (Epstein should have been prosecuted in 2008)

• Democratic structures that can’t be captured by spending (overturn Citizens United, publicly fund campaigns)

• Progressive taxation that actually funds the commons they’ve opted out of

You want to stay a billionaire? Fine. But you’re paying into the society that enabled that accumulation, and you’re operating under the same legal and social rules as everyone else. No more buying insulation.

Why This Matters to Circles
Circles aren’t naive about power. They’re explicit about it.

The reason to organize in Dunbarrios isn’t because everyone’s equal—it’s because everyone’s visible. Power, wealth, influence—these still differentiate. But they can’t hide. Can’t pretend not to affect the network. Can’t buy insulation from consequences.

It’s not “no billionaires because wealth is bad.” It’s “no billionaires as currently constructed because wealth without accountability within hierarchies becomes pathological.” Fix the accountability structure, and differentiated wealth stops being existentially threatening to everyone else.

That’s the offer: coordinate with us, remain visible in the network, accept that your power comes with ongoing responsibility to those affected—and we’re fine with you being wealthy. Refuse that accountability, keep buying insulation, keep pretending you don’t need the rest of us—and we’ll build systems that work without you.

The choice is theirs. But circles aren’t waiting for permission.

Property vs. Extraction (This Isn’t Communism)

Critical distinction: You can own personal property—home, tools, creative work. What you can’t do is use ownership to extract perpetual rents from others’ labor or need.

The difference between:

• Personal property (things you use)

• Capital (things you own to extract value from others)

How this handles rental income:

Small landlords (1-3 properties, active maintenance) operate differently than real estate empires. Compassionism doesn’t eliminate housing providers—it restructures incentives:

• Housing cooperatives where residents collectively own buildings

• Community land trusts separating building ownership from land ownership

• Time-limited property claims for investment properties (not perpetual rent extraction)

• Progressive taxation on rental income preventing accumulation

• Rent tied to maintenance costs plus modest return, not “whatever the market will bear”

You can earn from providing housing. You can’t build dynasties by capturing others’ need for shelter.

This preserves private ownership while preventing the pathology where ownership becomes pure extraction divorced from contribution.

Knowledge Attribution Without Monopoly

If value emerges collectively, how do we handle intellectual property?

Current IP law serves moat-building. The person who patents a gene sequence didn’t create in isolation—they built on centuries of collective knowledge. Yet law grants perpetual extraction rights.

Compassionist framework: ideas get attributed without granting monopoly. The AI layer tracks contribution—who proposed concepts, who developed them, who solved blockers. Not to determine ownership, but recognize the creation network.

Distributed ledgers offer one mechanism. Immutable contribution records, visible to all, allowing attribution without central control. When circles create value, it returns to the circle according to agreed distribution. You get credit, your share of value created. You don’t own the idea forever.

The Algorithm as Invisible Hierarchy

Here’s a contemporary trap worth naming: modern platforms promise democratization—anyone can start a YouTube channel, publish on Medium, build an audience, make a living from creative work. No gatekeepers, no credentials required, just you and your ideas finding people who care.

Sounds like circles, right?

But watch what actually happens. The algorithm is the hidden boss you never see, never negotiate with, that changes the rules without warning and rewards optimization over authenticity.

I watched a documentary recently about child influencer families—parents who started genuinely sharing their lives, their kids growing up, authentic family moments. Within months, every single one had become marketing specialists. Checking stats multiple times daily. Obsessing over upload schedules, thumbnail designs, viewer retention graphs. The camera became omnipresent. Kids became performers. Privacy evaporated. And inevitably, the monsters emerged—predators attracted to the exposure, forcing these families to build security fortresses against the very “audience” they were supposedly serving.

The pattern is always the same:

Authentic beginning → You share because you want to, building real connection with people who care
Algorithmic feedback → Stats become visible, dopamine hits from views/likes
Optimization creep → Content shifts from “what we want to share” to “what performs”
Inauthenticity cascade → You’re performing for metrics, not creating for humans
Addiction loop → Can’t stop even when it’s clearly destroying what you started for

This is hierarchical capture disguised as democratization. The structure looks circular—direct creator-viewer relationship—but functions hierarchically. There’s a mediating authority between you and your audience: the algorithm. And it doesn’t care about your Dunbarrio, your authentic contribution, your Compassionist recognition of interconnection.

It cares about:

• Watch time (keep eyeballs glued)

• Click-through rate (manipulate curiosity)

• Advertiser-friendly content (self-censor for profit)

• Engagement metrics that look good to shareholders

You think you’re independent, but you’re performing for an inhuman metric system that rewards exploitation—of your kids, your authenticity, your relationships, your creative vision—and punishes genuine human-scale connection.

The Compassionist Response

Circles can use platforms for distribution without being captured by them. But it requires explicit boundaries:

• Decide NOW what you won’t optimize for (no manufactured drama, no clickbait that betrays your message)

• Form a Dunbarrio accountability circle—5-15 people who watch your work and tell you when you’re slipping into algorithm-chasing

• Track metrics you care about (depth of engagement, quality of dialogue) not metrics the platform surfaces

• Build audience relationships outside the platform (email, direct community spaces) so the algorithm can’t hold you hostage

• Reject professionalization pressure—amateur in the original sense: doing it for love, not scale

YouTube, Substack, any platform—these are distribution channels, not validation sources. The work exists whether the algorithm promotes it or not. 47 engaged viewers beats 47,000 passive consumers every time.

In Compassionist terms, the algorithm breaks direct relationship. You’re not creating for humans you can see and care about—you’re performing for a system that doesn’t recognize human value, only engagement statistics that serve its advertisers.

Dunbarrios resist this by keeping creation rooted in bounded groups where feedback comes from faces you know. You can use platforms to amplify beyond your circle, but you don’t let them define success or warp what you make.

This tension—how to build Dunbarrios and share knowledge trees in a digital landscape dominated by algorithmic hierarchies—deserves deeper exploration. How do we use these tools without being captured by them? How do we distribute ideas at scale without surrendering to the metrics that demand we optimize away our humanity?

That’s a conversation for another essay. For now, just recognize: the algorithm is a hierarchy pretending to be a circle. Don’t mistake distribution access for actual freedom.

ACT V: AMERICAN IMPLEMENTATION

Democracy as Circle Under Tension

The American experiment tried circular governance—balance of powers, representative system, authority from collective agreement. Then money captured it. Lobbying, corporate boards rotating into regulatory positions. The forms remain, substance leaked away.

Now: permanent deadlock. Nothing moves. But reframe it: what if deadlock isn’t dysfunction but the circle under tension? The system protecting itself from capture by either extreme—a tug-of-war where neither side can drag everyone.

The problem isn’t tension. It’s that we organized it hierarchically. Representatives claiming to speak for millions. Federal systems imposing uniform solutions across radically different contexts.

What if we relocated decision-making to scales where people see each other’s faces? Where “the other side” isn’t abstraction but your neighbor? This is what Dunbarrios offer civically: local governance at human scale where ideological purity becomes harder to maintain.

At 15-person level, disagreement becomes negotiation. At 150, opposing views become parallel experiments. Most decisions shouldn’t happen federally—push them to where coordination actually works.

Practical Bootstrapping in the US

Legal structures that enable this now:

• Worker cooperatives (legal in all 50 states)

• LLCs with cooperative bylaws

• Community land trusts (200+ operating in US)

• Benefit corporations (recognizes stakeholders beyond shareholders)

• Municipal codes allowing alternative governance (see: Madison WI cooperative development)

Where to start:

• Cities with existing cooperative infrastructure (NYC, Bay Area, Madison, Portland, Minneapolis)

• Regions with maker culture/mutual aid networks

• Communities recovering from industrial collapse (Rust Belt, rural areas) where traditional structures already failed

Federal system interface: Social Security, Medicare, military service—these persist during transition. Dunbarrios aren’t opting out, they’re building parallel infrastructure. As circles provide services better (childcare co-ops, health clinics, schools), people gravitate toward what works.

This isn’t insurrection. It’s succession—the pyramid gets abandoned as better alternatives prove themselves.

First steps: Find 5-15 people. Shared purpose. One rule: no permanent leader, only rotating facilitation. Build something—software, art, mutual aid, knowledge. Use transparent contribution tracking. When it works, federate with adjacent circles. Form 150-person economic units. Pool resources.

Formalize legally as cooperatives or trusts for protection while preserving internal circle governance. As more emerge and network, they provide services traditionally monopolized. You’re not asking permission—you’re building what works.

THE INVITATION

My oldest asked me years back why he had to do what I said. He was eleven, questioning everything.

“You don’t, not really,” I told him. “You have to listen about crossing streets because I’m responsible for keeping you alive. But I’m not in charge of you as a person. After that we’re just two people who hopefully still like each other.”

“So when I’m grown up, you can’t tell me what to do?”

“Right. And you’ll stop listening well before then.”

He grinned. Already was.

We train the next generation into submission and call it socialization. What if we trained them for circles instead? Taught them coordination doesn’t require domination, that disagreement is information, that their voice matters because they’re here?

I’ve been in maybe a dozen situations where circles actually worked. School project whiteboard session at 2am, nobody directing. On a team with crunchtime deadlines where we just worked hand-in-hand—no status games, just problems and trust. Years ago, neighbors starting a tool library. Nobody in charge, yet coordinating who needs what. These examples work because nobody’s trying to yield control.

That feeling—that’s what we’re optimizing for. Not efficiency metrics or scale for its own sake. Aliveness.

The pyramid promised order and delivered alienation. Meritocracy and delivered dynasties. Prosperity and delivered precarity.

The circle, grounded in Compassionism, promises nothing except recognizing what we’ve always been: apertures through which consciousness perceives itself, temporarily convinced of separateness, slowly remembering we’re looking at the same strange sky.

When you truly see another person—not as report or resource but as another window looking out—the pyramid becomes impossible. You can’t dominate someone you’ve recognized as yourself in a different location.

Compassionism is the foundational recognition that makes this necessary. Dunbarrios are the architecture—nested, human-scale communities that can coordinate at any scale. Knowledge trees let distributed expertise stay discoverable. The mechanics—rotating coordinators, transparent justice, distributed ownership—emerge naturally when you honor interconnection.

These aren’t speculative. They’re assembly instructions.

But some will work. You’ll feel it before you can name it. Value emerging from the between. Not performing for evaluation but creating what none of you could build alone.

Start with fifteen. Your primary Dunbarrio. The people you’ll actually work with, create with, coordinate with. Don’t design perfect governance for three months—that’s hierarchy-brain. Start messy. Start now.

Form your circle. See what grows.

The doors are emerging from the haze. Walk through.

You stub your toe at 3am on the way to piss and the pain is so complete, so non-negotiable, that every spiritual insight you’ve ever had evaporates. There is only: throbbing, the cold floor, your idiocy for not turning on the light. The ego’s emergency broadcast drowns out everything: Why does this keep happening to me?

And in that moment—that perfectly ordinary moment of being human and stupid and hurt—you forget that you are God playing hide-and-seek with itself.

The forgetting isn’t a bug. It’s the entire game.

I. The Wrinkle That Started Everything

One of my favorite teachers used to say the universe began with a word. She was close, but words came later—after the wrinkle had already decided to misunderstand itself on purpose.

Before the Big Bang was the Big Thought. Not a thought about something. Just: thinking itself into existence, a disturbance in Nothing so slight it could have dissolved back immediately. But it didn’t. It got curious.

That curiosity—that first “huh?”—is still echoing. You’re reading it right now. I’m writing it. The space between us that feels so convincingly real is just the echo playing with different harmonics, pretending there’s a “you” and an “I” when really there’s only: this-ing.

The physicists almost caught it. They kept drilling down past atoms, past quarks, past the Planck length, looking for the fundamental stuff. And they found—wonderfully, terribly—nothing. Not empty space (that’s still something). Not darkness. Just the absence that precedes presence, the silence before music, the pregnant pause that contains every word that could ever be spoken.

Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle whispers it: you can’t measure both position and momentum because the observer and observed are not actually separate. The act of looking changes what’s there. Not because consciousness is powerful—because consciousness is all there is, hallucinating matter to give itself something to do on a Sunday afternoon that lasts forever because time is another lie we tell ourselves to make the dream feel linear.1

Ramana Maharshi spent years in a cave asking “Who am I?” until the question ate itself. What he found: the questioner and the questioned were the same mouth swallowing its own tail. The Ouroboros isn’t a symbol. It’s a documentary.

II. How the Dream Maintains Itself (And Why You Keep Falling For It)

Here’s what they don’t teach you in philosophy 101:

The subject-object split is a magic trick performed so skillfully you’ve forgotten you’re both the magician and the audience.

Right now, you think you’re “in here” reading “out there.” But watch closely: where’s the boundary? Where does the text end and your awareness of it begin? You can’t find the seam because there isn’t one. There’s only the seamless knowing of these words, and you’ve retroactively divided it into “me” and “not-me” to create the illusion of encounter.

The Buddhists have a term: pratītyasamutpāda—dependent origination. Nothing exists independently. Every “thing” is a knot in the web of everything else, with no actual substance at its core. Pull the thread and it’s not that things disappear—they were never things to begin with. Just processes. Verbs pretending to be nouns.

You are not a being having experiences. You’re experiencing pretending to coagulate into a being.

Donald Hoffman’s interface theory of perception gets halfway there: he argues we don’t see reality as it is—we see a user interface, like desktop icons hiding the computer’s actual circuitry. He’s right, but he doesn’t go far enough. It’s not that reality exists behind the interface. The interface is all there is. Icons all the way down, until you zoom out far enough to see: oh, I’m the screen and the pixels and the hand moving the mouse.

But this realization is unstable. The ego—that beautiful, tragic defense mechanism—needs separation to function. It’s the bouncer at the club of selfhood, checking IDs, maintaining the velvet rope between “me” and “everything else.” Without that rope, how would you know where to send the anxiety? Who would feel insulted when someone cuts you off in traffic?

So the ego constructs narrative. It takes the raw, meaningless flux of sensation and weaves it into a story with characters, plot, stakes.

This happened because that happened, and if I’d only done X differently, Y wouldn’t have followed.

Causation is the ego’s favorite drug.

Time is its dealer.

III. The Daily Struggle, Or: What Happens When God Gets A Parking Ticket

Let’s get specific. You meditate. You read the books. You know—intellectually, philosophically, maybe even experientially in peak moments—that you are the dreamer, not the dream.

And then:

• Your partner looks at their phone while you’re talking

• The job offer goes to someone less qualified

• Your body betrays you (pain, illness, the gradual entropy of aging)

• A global pandemic traps you indoors for two years

• Someone you love dies and dies and keeps being dead no matter how much you understand impermanence

The dream won’t cooperate.

And suddenly the smooth loop of “I create reality with my thoughts” glitches out. The ego rushes in with its emergency protocol: assign blame, construct timeline, find exit strategy. You’re no longer the author of your experience—you’re the victim of circumstances, scrambling to regain control over a life that’s happening to you.

This is what Chogyam Trungpa called “spiritual materialism”—using enlightenment concepts as another form of ego protection.

“I’m not suffering, I’m observing my suffering.”
“This pain is an illusion.”
“Everything happens for a reason.”

But here’s the genuinely psychedelic part:

Even the resistance is you. Even the forgetting is you. Even the ego’s desperate scramble to maintain separation is you, practicing the elaborate art of self-deception.

The boundary you can’t cross? You’re imagining it—so vividly, so committedly, that you’ve fooled yourself. The other person who won’t bend to your will? That’s you wearing a mask of otherness convincing enough to pass the Turing test of separate selfhood.

You’re not bad at manifesting your reality. You’re incredible at it. You’ve manifested something so resistant to your will that it feels genuinely external. That’s advanced-level dreaming.

Rainer Maria Rilke, in a letter to a young poet:

The dragons are you. The princesses are you. The fear, the courage, the love—all you, playing every role in a one-person show so elaborate you bought a ticket and forgot you wrote the script.2

IV. The Forgotten Senses: Breath and Voice as Participatory Probes

We talk about five senses like they’re the complete inventory. But we’ve forgotten the most radical ones—the senses that don’t just receive the world but actively participate in creating it moment to moment.

Breath.

Not just a physiological necessity. A sense—the direct, continuous experience of the inside/outside boundary dissolving with every inhale and exhale. There’s no moment where air is definitively “not you” versus “you.” It’s always mid-transition, always shared, always proving that the atmosphere is your extended body and your lungs are just a temporary holding pattern in a larger circulation.

You are breathing the same nitrogen atoms that dinosaurs breathed. The same oxygen molecules that passed through Einstein’s lungs as he conceived relativity, through your grandmother’s lungs as she gave birth to your mother, through the lungs of the person who just walked past you on the street. The boundaries are fictional. Breath keeps exposing the lie.

Voice.

The sculpting of shared air into meaning. You’re not passively receiving the world—you’re actively probing it, sending out vibrations and reading what comes back. Like bats echolocating through darkness, we humans constantly echolocate through emotional space:

Are you there?
Do you feel this too?
Does this meaning land?

Every conversation is a sonar ping. Every joke, every argument, every “I love you” or “fuck you”—acoustic probes testing the shape of intersubjective reality, mapping the contours of what’s possible between consciousnesses.

The dissonance comes when you’re clinging to a fixed worldview, sending out the same ping repeatedly and getting angry when the echo doesn’t confirm what you expected. The ego wants the environment to stay static so its map remains valid. But reality keeps updating, other consciousnesses keep being sovereign, and the echoes keep coming back saying: your map is outdated, time to adjust.

The bat doesn’t argue with the echo. It updates its flight path.

Maybe that’s the practice.3

V. The Electromagnetic Spectrum of Self-Deception

Let’s map how the dream maintains its convincingness through the sensory apparatus—because the body is the original special effect, the prosthetic that makes the play feel real.

• Vision: Distance. The world laid out there, apparently existing whether you look or not. The ultimate lie. Close your eyes—where did it go? Not into darkness. Into absence. Open them—where did it come from? Not from “out there.” From the same place dreams come from when you’re asleep, except now there’s consensus (we mostly agree what we’re seeing) which makes it feel objective.

• Hearing: Vibration arriving from elsewhere. Someone calls your name and you turn, as if the sound traveled to you rather than arising as you. But listen closely to silence—it’s not the absence of sound. It’s the canvas on which sound appears, and the canvas is prior, is primary, is you.

• Touch: The skin as border patrol. This is the most convincing trick—the sense that you end where the air begins. But grab your own hand. Which hand is touching, which is being touched? They’re trading roles so fast you can’t catch them. The boundary wavers. Push harder—does the sensation happen in your skin or in your nervous system or in your brain or in your awareness? Follow it back to its source and it dissolves into: happening.

• Taste: The threshold where “not-me” becomes “me.” You put an apple in your mouth and at what exact moment does it stop being apple and start being you? In the chewing? The swallowing? The digestion? The chemical transformation into blood sugar? There’s no clean line. Just a gradient from “object” to “experience” with no actual border.

And then the chemicals—the substances that reveal how flimsy the whole construct is:

Alcohol makes you brave or sad depending on the evening. Same molecule, different story. The alcohol isn’t “causing” anything—it’s just lowering the volume on the ego’s narrative generator, and what rushes in (courage, grief, horniness, rage) was always there, always you, just edited out of the regular broadcast.

Sugar, coffee, SSRIs, heartbreak, meditation, sleep deprivation, falling in love, winning an argument, losing a parent—all different knobs on the same control panel, tuning the receiver to different frequencies of you.

The addictive quality (whether substance or behavior or emotion) is the dream caught in a recursive loop, one vibration pattern echoing so intensely it generates its own gravity well. You fall into it not because you’re weak but because the pattern is working—it’s providing some texture, some evidence that you exist, even if that evidence is pain.

William James, in The Varieties of Religious Experience, documented dozens of mystical states induced by everything from fasting to nitrous oxide. His conclusion: consciousness is not produced by the brain—it’s filtered by it. The brain is a reducing valve, constraining infinite awareness into a manageable stream called “being a person who needs to buy milk and pay taxes.”

Remove the valve temporarily (psychedelics, meditation, ecstasy, trauma) and the stream widens. You remember—briefly, vividly—that you are not the trickle. You are the ocean pretending to be a faucet.

Angles out angels, my friend used to say. Every sense, every sensation, every altered state—just different angles on the same singular dreaming. Or if you prefer the mystical framing: different angels, each a messenger showing you another face of yourself, none more “true” than the others.4

VI. The Filmmaker as Consciousness-Angle-Adjuster

We’ve built entire industries around identifying people who can adjust the angle of collective dreaming.

Kubrick, Tarkovsky, Lynch, Malick—they’re not showing you “the world.” They’re showing you how consciousness looks at the world from a specific vector. The camera angle isn’t neutral; it’s ontological. Where you place the lens is where you place awareness, and suddenly the audience inhabits that particular focal point of the dream.

Vertigo’s dolly-zoom doesn’t just create a visual effect—it creates the sensation of dissociation, of reality becoming unstable. You don’t watch it; you experience your own perceptual apparatus glitching. Hitchcock temporarily hijacked your angle of dreaming and showed you what vertigo feels like from the inside.

2001’s star-gate sequence doesn’t depict transcendence—it induces it. Kubrick understood: if you show the right sequence of images at the right rhythm, you can trigger an altered state in the viewer. The film doesn’t represent the experience; it is the experience.

We immortalize these Directors not because they’re creating something separate from the dream, but because they’re lucid dreamers who can manipulate the dream’s parameters while staying inside it. They’re showing the collective: “Look, consciousness can do this too. Did you know you could vibrate at this frequency?”

The claim-staking through film schools, theory, criticism—that’s the ego trying to systematize what’s ultimately unsystematizable. “If I learn these techniques, I too can adjust angles.” And it works, partially. You can hone the craft, master the grammar of cinema, study the masters.

But the true auteurs aren’t just technically skilled—they’re permeable. They let the dream dream through them rather than trying to control it. They’re channels, not commanders. The best films feel like they arrived from somewhere else, fully formed, inevitable—because in a sense, they did. They were always in the collective unconscious, waiting for the right aperture to expose them.

VII. The Screen as Mirror, The Scroll as Compulsion

But now we’ve taken this ancient hunger—to share perception, to say “look, do you see what I see?”—and weaponized it into a feedback loop that’s too fast, too numerous, too optimized for engagement over meaning.

TikTok isn’t showing you life. It’s showing you life compressed into the exact temporal rhythm that prevents reflection. Scroll, consume, react, scroll. The breath between inputs—the moment where you could integrate what you just witnessed—has been deleted from the interface.

You’re echolocating so rapidly the echoes overlap into white noise.

And the algorithm learns: this angle gets response, so show more of this angle, until your entire feed is one emotional frequency on loop. The echo chamber isn’t just ideological—it’s perceptual. You stop encountering angles that challenge your current vibration because the system has optimized for reinforcement, not expansion.

Instagram used to be “here’s a photo I took.” Now it’s “here’s proof I exist in a way you should envy.” The dopamine hit comes not from sharing perception but from metric validation—likes, comments, shares. The content becomes secondary to the response, and you start creating not what moves you but what moves the algorithm.

Quality-focus can still elate. When you slow down enough to actually metabolize a piece of art, a film, a long-form essay, it can shift your entire angle on reality. But that requires deliberate disconnection from the dopamine treadmill. It requires saying: “I will not consume the next input until I’ve fully digested this one.”

Which is hard. Because the system is designed to make not-consuming feel like missing out, like falling behind, like losing access to the shared dream everyone else is participating in.

The moat-building happens when you decide: I know how reality works, and inputs that contradict my model are threats, not gifts.

Whether it’s:

• Political tribalism (my side has truth, yours is delusion)

• Aesthetic snobbery (only this kind of art counts, the rest is trash)

• Spiritual materialism (my path is authentic, yours is ego)

• Academic gatekeeping (only peer-reviewed angles are valid)

All variations of the same move: hardening the boundary to protect the existing angle from being adjusted.

But recognizing our “divine context”—that every angle is a valid facet of the same singular dreaming—requires porousness. It requires being willing to let other people’s echoes reshape your map. Not abandoning discernment (some angles are more useful, some are more beautiful, some are more true), but staying open to the possibility that someone else’s angle might reveal something yours can’t access alone.5

VIII. Peirce’s Four Methods (Or: How We Fixate Belief to Avoid the Abyss)

Charles Sanders Peirce saw this coming in 1877. In “The Fixation of Belief,” he identified four ways humans stabilize their worldviews when doubt arises—four strategies for dealing with the anxiety of not-knowing:

1. The Method of Tenacity
“I believe this, and I will continue believing it no matter what.”

Pure ego-defense. You encounter contradictory evidence and just... ignore it. Curate your information diet to avoid dissonance. This is the person who’s been wronged once and decides an entire group is irredeemable. It’s the conspiracy theorist who treats every counter-argument as proof of the conspiracy’s depth.

Peirce’s critique: It works individually but collapses socially. You can maintain your belief through sheer willpower, but the moment you encounter someone with equal tenacity holding the opposite belief, the method reveals its arbitrariness.

2. The Method of Authority
“I believe this because the institution/leader/tradition says so.”

Outsource the epistemic anxiety to a trusted source. The Church says it, therefore it’s true. The Party says it, therefore it’s true. The Journal published it, peer-reviewed, therefore it’s true. More stable than tenacity because it creates consensus—a shared framework where doubt can be managed collectively.

Peirce’s critique: It only works within the boundary of the authority’s reach. Different authorities contradict each other (Catholic vs. Protestant, Marxist vs. Libertarian, DSM-IV vs. DSM-V), and there’s no meta-authority to adjudicate. Plus, it requires suppressing individual inquiry—heresy and dissent threaten the system.

3. The Method of A Priori
“I believe this because it’s self-evidently reasonable, agreeable to logic and human nature.”

This sounds more sophisticated—you’re not blindly clinging or deferring to authority, you’re using reason. But Peirce’s devastating insight: what feels “self-evident” is culturally conditioned, temperamentally biased, and shifts with fashion.

The Rationalists thought they were doing pure logic, but their “self-evident truths” aligned suspiciously well with their class interests. Descartes’ “clear and distinct ideas” were clear and distinct to a 17th-century French Catholic mathematician—not universally.

Peirce’s critique: This method feels like freedom (you’re thinking for yourself!) but it’s taste disguised as truth. You believe what’s “reasonable” to your particular angle, surround yourself with people who share that angle, and mistake consensus for objectivity.

4. The Method of Science
“I believe this provisionally, based on evidence that could, in principle, be overturned by better evidence.”

Peirce’s preferred method—not because it gives you Truth with a capital T, but because it’s the only method that builds in self-correction. You form hypotheses, test them against reality, update based on what comes back. The echo matters more than your prior belief.

Crucially, this isn’t “scientism” (science as new authority). It’s a process: fallibilism, openness to revision, intersubjective verification. You believe something because it’s the best current model given available evidence, and you hold it lightly, ready to update.

This is the only method that can withstand long-run contact with reality. Tenacity breaks on social contact, authority breaks on competing authorities, a priori breaks on cultural relativity. But the scientific method—properly understood as radical openness to being wrong—can survive because it expects to be wrong and treats wrongness as information, not threat.

Here’s the trap:

We’ve now built systems that optimize for Methods 1-3 and punish Method 4.

Social media rewards:

• Tenacity (strong opinions, never wavering, “owning” your take)

• Authority (blue checks, credentialism, “experts say”)

• A Priori (what “feels right” to your in-group, aesthetic sorting)

It punishes:

• Uncertainty (admitting you don’t know is weakness)

• Revision (changing your mind is “flip-flopping”)

• Nuance (too many words, didn’t read, ratio’d)

The algorithm is a fixation-of-belief machine optimized for engagement, not truth. And engagement comes from certainty, tribal signaling, emotional intensity—all the things that make Method 4 impossible.

Your “dopamine scrolling” and “exclusionary echo-chamber-moat-building” are features, not bugs. The system wants you to fixate. It wants you to stop echolocating and start broadcasting—loudly, confidently, without room for the echo to come back and complicate things.

The way out:

Maybe breath-as-sense is also breath-as-epistemology.

Inhale: take in the new information, the contradictory angle, the dissonant echo
Pause: hold it without immediately categorizing as threat or confirmation
Exhale: release the need to know for certain, let the uncertainty breathe
Pause: rest in the groundlessness before the next input arrives

Repeat.

That’s Peirce’s Method 4 embodied. That’s the bat’s echolocation. That’s the dream recognizing it can update its own code in real-time.6

IX. The Paradox of Solitary Sovereignty (Or: If Everyone’s God, Why Are You Such An Asshole?)

Let’s address the obvious question:

If I’m the dreamer and you’re the dreamer and we’re all localizations of the same singular awareness… what the fuck is empathy? And why does it matter if I hurt you, since “you” are also “me” and we’re both made of the same nothing?

This is where non-duality gets ethically dicey, and where spiritual narcissists use “we’re all one” to excuse being dickheads.

Here’s the resolution, and it’s subtle:

You are not God. You are how God experiences forgetting it’s God.

The difference matters.

If you’re God—capital G, sovereign creator—then sure, why not rewrite the rules? Why care about other people’s pain when you could just imagine it away?

But if you’re a localization—a particular eddy in the stream, a focal point where awareness has temporarily narrowed into the experience of being separate—then other localizations are not obstacles. They’re necessary reflections.

You cannot see your own face without a mirror. Other people are how you see yourself from angles you can’t access alone. Their resistance isn’t infringement on your reality—it’s the dream showing you where you’ve drawn boundaries, what you’re still protecting, what you haven’t integrated yet.

Martin Buber called this the “I-Thou” relationship versus “I-It.” Most of the time, we treat others as Its—objects to be used, obstacles to navigate, extras in our movie. But occasionally, in moments of genuine meeting, another person becomes Thou—not an object but another subject, equally real, equally central to their own experience. And in that meeting, something happens that transcends both: a third thing, a between-space where the dream recognizes itself from two angles simultaneously.

Empathy, then, is not pity. It’s the dream recognizing different textures of itself and softening accordingly. You soften toward others not because they’re truly separate (they’re not), but because their suffering is yours wearing a different mask, and causing pain to the mask is causing pain to the face beneath it, which is your face, which is the only face there is.7

The neuroscience backs this: mirror neurons fire both when you perform an action and when you watch someone else perform it. Your brain doesn’t fully distinguish between self and other at the motor level. Empathy isn’t learned—it’s default. The ego has to work to suppress it, to maintain the boundaries.

This is why cruelty requires dehumanization: you have to actively convince yourself the other isn’t you. When the barriers drop (MDMA, intense eye contact, collective ritual, crisis), the empathy floods back because it was always there, always primary.

Representation through participation. You’re the audience and every actor. The play only works if you fully commit to each role—including the ones that hurt, the ones that fail, the ones that never get resolution.

X. When The Dream Infringes (And What That Reveals)

So you’re flowing. You’re in the zone, reality is cooperative, you’re playing with your sovereignty. And then:

• Someone says no.

• The job falls through.

• Your body breaks.

• The plane is delayed.

• The person you love doesn’t love you back.

The dream infringes. And it feels like proof—see? I’m NOT in control. There IS a world separate from my consciousness, and it just fucked me.

But watch what’s actually happening:

The defensive mechanism activates. Not because the boundary is real, but because you’ve decided it’s real. The ego isn’t wrong for defending you—it’s doing exactly what it evolved to do: maintain the coherence of the self-story in the face of contradiction.

The uncrossable boundary—the “no” you can’t penetrate, the limit you can’t imagine past—is yours. You created it. Not consciously, not deliberately, but as part of the dream’s architecture. Because a dream where you have total control is boring. There’s no surprise, no risk, no stakes.

So you dream limits. You dream resistance. You dream other wills that won’t bend to yours—not to torture yourself, but to make the game interesting.

Nagarjuna’s Mūlamadhyamakakārikā (the foundational text of Madhyamaka Buddhism) argues that emptiness (śūnyatā) doesn’t mean nihilism—it means radical interdependence. Nothing has inherent existence, but that very lack of inherent existence is what allows things to function. The glass can hold water precisely because it’s empty of “glass-ness”—it’s just atoms arranged in a temporary pattern that appears solid enough to be useful.

Same with the boundaries. They’re empty of inherent reality, but that emptiness allows them to work—to create the friction that makes experience possible.

So when someone infringes on your reality, two truths hold simultaneously:

1. They are you, another localization of the same awareness, and the resistance is self-generated

2. They are sovereign, equally real within the dream, and their “no” is valid

The paradox doesn’t resolve. It’s not supposed to. You’re not meant to collapse the distinction fully (that’s death, or enlightenment, which might be the same thing). You’re meant to play in the tension—to hold both truths lightly, to soften into the impossibility.

This is what the Zen masters mean by “carrying water, chopping wood.” After enlightenment, the dream continues. You still stub your toe. It still hurts. But the meaning of the hurt shifts. It’s no longer proof of your separation from Source. It’s Source saying surprise, motherfucker—bet you forgot I could do this.8

XI. Nothing Is Painful Unless You Think So (But Good Luck With That)

Let’s talk about spiritual bypassing, because I can feel the objection forming:

This is all very poetic, but if I’m in chronic pain, or grieving, or trapped in an abusive situation, telling me “it’s just your thoughts” is not only useless—it’s cruel.

You’re right. So let me be precise:

Pain and suffering are not the same thing.

Pain is sensation—raw, neurological, undeniable. You touch a hot stove, nociceptors fire, the signal reaches your brain. That’s pain. It’s mechanical. It happens whether you’re enlightened or not.

Suffering is the story you tell about the pain. The “why me,” the “this shouldn’t be happening,” the “I can’t survive this,” the projection into the future where it never ends. That’s suffering. And that is optional—not because you can think it away, but because you can see it for what it is: a narrative layer the ego adds to make sense of the senseless.

Shinzen Young (a neuroscientist and meditation teacher who’s done fascinating work with pain patients) has a formula:

Suffering = Pain × Resistance

If resistance goes to zero, suffering goes to zero—even if pain remains. You can be in agony and not suffer if you stop fighting the agony, stop making it mean something about you or your worth or the fairness of the universe.

This is not the same as passivity. It’s not “accept your abuse.” It’s: recognize that the pain is happening, and recognize that your narrative about the pain is a separate layer you can work with.

Viktor Frankl survived Auschwitz by finding meaning in meaninglessness. His conclusion:

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

He’s not saying the Holocaust wasn’t real or that positive thinking would have stopped it. He’s saying: even in hell, there’s a hairline fracture of agency in how you meet what’s happening. Not control over circumstances. Control over your relationship to them.

So no, you can’t think away chronic illness. You can’t manifest your way out of systemic oppression. You can’t “high vibe” past trauma. The dream has physics—internal rules it follows even though they’re made up. Gravity still works even though it’s just curved spacetime which is just geometry which is just math which is just pattern which is just… you get it.

But you can shift from “this is happening TO me” to “this is happening AS me.” Same pain, different framing. And that shift—subtle, almost unnoticeable—is the difference between drowning and swimming in the same water.9

XII. What’s Beyond This Dream? (Spoiler: You’re Not Going To Like It)

People want the secret ending. The cheat code. The moment where you wake up from the dream into some meta-reality that’s more real, more stable, more *something*.

Sorry. There isn’t one.

Nothing is beyond this dream because there is no “beyond.” There’s only Nothing—which is also Everything, which is also this, right now, the words on the screen and the awareness reading them and the space between that never actually separated them.

The Upanishads say it plainly: Tat Tvam Asi—“Thou art That.” You are not moving toward enlightenment. You are enlightenment that has temporarily convinced itself it’s a seeker. The pathless path. The gateless gate.

The punchline is: there was never a joke.

Eckhart Tolle describes enlightenment as “the end of the search for enlightenment.” Not because you found what you were looking for—because you realized the search was the only thing preventing you from seeing it was always here.

The Zen koan about the ox-herding pictures:

• First you search for the ox (enlightenment).

• Then you see its tracks.

• Then you glimpse it.

• Then you catch it.

• Then you tame it.

• Then you ride it home.

• Then you transcend the ox.

• Then you return to the marketplace with gift-bestowing hands.

The end point looks identical to the starting point—same world, same body, same daily tasks—but the experiencing of it has shifted. You’re not ignorant anymore, but you’re also not special. You’ve just stopped arguing with what is.

Alan Watts used to say: “The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.”

But here’s the twist Watts maybe didn’t say enough:

You’re allowed to enjoy the dream. You’re allowed to play, to build, to love, to grieve, to strive, to rest. Recognizing it’s a dream doesn’t require you to lucid-dream your way into some detached, dispassionate observer mode. That’s just another ego trap—spiritual bypassing dressed up as non-attachment.

The dream continues. You’re still going to stub your toe. Fall in love. Bury people you can’t imagine living without. Get irrationally angry about traffic. Laugh at stupid jokes. Cry at beautiful music.

The only difference: you might catch yourself mid-stub and think, oh right. I’m doing this to myself. How delightfully absurd.

And then you’ll forget again. Because the forgetting is the point. The game only works if you commit fully—even to the parts where you pretend you’re not playing.10

XIII. The Ego’s Last Stand (Or: Why You’re Still Reading This)

Let me guess what you’re thinking:

Okay, this is beautiful and mind-bending and maybe even true. But what the hell am I supposed to DO with it? How does this change anything?

That question—that grasping for application, for takeaway, for utility—is the ego making its last stand. It wants to commodify the insight, package it into a life hack, add it to the self-optimization stack. “Five Ways To Remember You’re The Dreamer (Number Three Will Shock You!)”

But here’s the uncomfortable answer:

This doesn’t give you anything. It takes everything away.

It strips the narrative. The sense of forward progress. The belief that somewhere ahead, if you just think/meditate/achieve/heal/optimize enough, you’ll finally arrive at the place where everything makes sense and stays making sense.

You won’t. There is no arrival. There’s only this—the eternal present where you’re always already awake and always falling back asleep, always sovereign and always forgetting your sovereignty, always the dreamer and always lost in the dream.

Ram Dass (né Richard Alpert, the Harvard psychologist who went to India and came back weird) tells a story:

The point: the mystical states, the peak experiences, the moments of clarity where the veil drops—those are previews. Reminders. Little post-it notes from your deeper self saying “hey, remember what you actually are?”

But they’re not the destination. There is no destination. Just the ongoing practice of remembering and forgetting, softening and contracting, playing and pretending you’re not playing.

So what do you do?

Nothing. Everything. Whatever you were already doing, but maybe with a lighter touch.

You still take the job, end the relationship, book the flight, have the argument, make the art, pay the taxes, grieve the losses, celebrate the wins. The dream continues its dreaming.

But maybe—maybe—in the middle of the most serious, stake-laden moment of your life, you catch a flicker of recognition:

Oh. I’m making this up as I go. We all are. And it’s the most beautiful, tragic, hilarious cosmic joke that’s ever been told.

And maybe you laugh.

Not because nothing matters. Because everything matters—precisely because none of it’s real, which means you get to decide what it means, and the fact that you keep choosing to play the game even though you know it’s a game is the most profound act of love imaginable.

You are the wrinkle in Nothing that decided to keep wrinkling.

And from here on out, Everything continues.11

XIV. Coda: The Stubbed Toe Revisited

It’s 3am again. You’re stumbling toward the bathroom. Your toe finds the bedframe with that perfect, nauseating crunch.

And for a moment—just a flash—before the ego’s narrative kicks in, before the “fuck” and the “why” and the limping and the self-recrimination—

There’s just: pain-ing.

No sufferer. No story. Just the pure, undiluted sensation of this happening.

And maybe you notice: the pain is inside your awareness, not happening to it. Awareness is the space in which the pain appears, and the space is untouched—vast, silent, okay with everything, including the pain.

And then, of course, you forget. The ego rushes back in:

I’m an idiot, I should’ve turned on the light, why does my furniture hate me, I’m going to be limping all week…

But for that one flash—that crack in the dream—you remembered.

You are not the toe. You are not the pain. You are not even the awareness of the pain.

You are the dreaming itself—the generative nothing that consumes its own creations, eternally tasting what it’s like to forget and remember, to be separate and whole, to stub your toe in the dark and curse and laugh and forget and do it all again tomorrow.

The game continues.

You’re still playing.

And that, somehow, is enough.

At some point, humanity stopped running the machine.
The machine began running humanity.

II. The Seduction of Structure

Here’s what makes ectoplasmic institutions so seductive: they work.

Not for us, necessarily. But they work for themselves with elegant, mindless persistence—the way a cancer works, the way a kudzu vine works, the way any sufficiently optimized system works once it sheds the inconvenience of purpose.

Systems that outlive their makers acquire the sheen of divinity. They’re not gods—they don’t need to be. They just need inertia, precedent, and a critical mass of people who’ve forgotten that the whole apparatus is optional. That it was invented by mortals and can be uninvented by mortals. That the org chart isn’t physics; it’s theater.

The irony is exquisite: these entities need no awareness to maintain power. Only our agreement to keep pretending they’re inevitable.

Money became their bloodstream.
Policy became their skeleton.
And the human being—the aware, trembling miracle of perception—became nutrient.

Consider the billionaire. Not as a person (they’re people, flawed and complicated like anyone), but as a category. As a structural phenomenon. In this light, a billionaire isn’t an achievement. They’re a symptom—a high priest of an unconscious cult, an index of systemic autoimmune disorder. Every billionaire is a policy failure, yes, but also something stranger: proof that our ectoplasmic institutions now dream without us.²

Their wealth isn’t earned in any meaningful sense. You can’t earn a billion dollars. There aren’t enough hours in a human life. What happens instead is structural: wealth gets extracted from the accumulated efforts of millions, funneled upward through institutional capillary action—tax structures, labor laws, corporate personhood, intellectual property regimes—and then ossified into dynasty. The billionaire doesn’t create the wealth. The machinery does. The billionaire just holds the bag.

Noam Chomsky likes to remind us that wage labor—the very foundation of this extraction—was considered degrading when it was first introduced. In early industrial America, working for a salary was seen as barely distinguishable from slavery. The assumption was that you might work for someone else temporarily, to gather capital, but the goal was always to return to independence—to own your tools, your time, your output. To be, in the fullest sense, yourself.

The fact that we now consider lifelong wage dependency normal—that we’ve accepted spending the majority of our waking hours enriching someone else’s enterprise—is itself evidence of successful ectolution. The institution convinced us that this arrangement was natural, inevitable, even virtuous. We forgot that we invented it. And that we could uninvent it.

Which makes billionaires and kings functionally identical.

Both are priests of the vertical illusion. Both stand atop pyramids that only exist because we keep stacking ourselves beneath them. The king said his power came from God. The billionaire says theirs comes from merit. Both are lying, but the lie works because the structure makes it feel true. When the org chart says you’re at the top, it’s easy to believe you climbed there. Harder to see that the chart itself is the violence.

III. The Myth of Natural Markets

You might object: isn’t this just supply and demand? Don’t markets naturally reward those who provide what people want? Aren’t billionaires just the inevitable result of voluntary exchange?

No. And here’s why that story is another institutional fiction we’ve naturalized.

Consider diamonds. For most of human history, they were pretty rocks—decorative, yes, but hardly the pinnacle of desire. Rubies, emeralds, and sapphires often outranked them in status and worth. Then De Beers bought up the world’s diamond mines and did something both brilliant and sinister: they manufactured scarcity where none existed. They controlled supply artificially, then invented demand through one of history’s most successful propaganda campaigns. In 1947, copywriter Mary Frances Gerety jotted down “A Diamond is Forever” while working for N.W. Ayer advertising agency on a piece of paper, almost off-hand, and then presented it to her colleagues the following morning. The slogan became myth—nearly as enduring as the stones it sold and still glitters in De Beers advertisements to this day.

The marketing convinced generations that diamond engagement rings weren’t just nice—they were necessary. That the strength of your marriage could be measured in carats. That love itself required this specific compressed carbon.

None of this was supply meeting organic demand. It was supply creating artificial scarcity while demand was manufactured through cultural engineering. The “free market” didn’t make diamonds valuable. De Beers made diamonds valuable by controlling the market and colonizing our imagination of what commitment means.

Markets don’t exist in the wild. They require property regimes (who can own what), contract law (how exchanges are enforced), and legal fictions (corporations as persons, intellectual property as “theft-able”). Change those institutional foundations, and you change what gets supplied, what gets demanded, and who captures the value.

We have more empty homes than homeless people—is that supply and demand working, or a system designed to prioritize investment returns over human shelter? We produce enough food globally for 10 billion people while millions starve—is that efficient resource allocation, or constructed scarcity serving profit? Patents keep life-saving medicines expensive long after R&D costs are recovered—is that innovation incentive, or rent-seeking?

Billionaires don’t emerge from markets working well. They emerge from markets designed to concentrate wealth—through monopoly capture, manufactured scarcity, labor arbitrage, financial engineering, and inherited advantage. Jeff Bezos didn’t get rich by perfectly matching supply to demand. He got rich by eliminating competition, exploiting warehouse workers, avoiding taxes, and manipulating stock prices. None of that is “the market rewarding value creation.” It’s institutional design rewarding extraction.

The universe’s fundamental tendency toward entropy—toward dispersal, equilibrium, flatness—doesn’t stop at economics. Energy wants to spread. So does wealth, when institutions don’t artificially dam it.

Markets can exist without billionaires. Cooperatives prove it. Social democracies prove it. Any system that caps wealth extraction and distributes ownership proves it. Supply and demand is a tool, not a god. And tools can be redesigned.

But here’s the deeper issue: the whole framework of supply and demand assumes separation. It assumes isolated actors competing for scarce resources, each maximizing individual gain. This is the economic expression of the same perceptual error that creates hierarchy—the belief that we stand apart from one another rather than entangled with one another.

Human greed isn’t a fixed constant. It’s a behavior that emerges from believing in separation. When you genuinely recognize that harming another harms yourself—not as moral philosophy but as lived reality, the way quantum entanglement suggests—then hoarding resources becomes incoherent. Not wrong in some ethical sense, but literally nonsensical, like trying to steal from your own hand.

I watched this play out in miniature recently. A manager told me, with absolute sincerity: “Once you become a manager, you won’t deal directly with the common people anymore.”

The common people.

As if a title change—a shift in the org chart, a few more zeros on the paycheck—fundamentally altered the substance of human being. As if management was a higher plane of existence rather than just a different function in a coordinated system. The ease with which he said it, the complete lack of awareness that he’d just dehumanized everyone he supposedly leads—that’s the delusion in its purest form.

The org chart had convinced him he’d become something other. Not just doing a different job, but being a different category of person. Hierarchy doesn’t just arrange us vertically—it makes us forget we’re made of the same stuff. That the whole apparatus is optional.

And once you forget that—once the separation feels real—then of course supply and demand looks like natural law. Of course billionaires look like the deserving winners. Of course “the common people” look like a different species.

The non-dual truth—that we’re waves in the same ocean, nodes in the same field—doesn’t erase difference or function. But it does erase the vertical fantasy. And with it, the whole economic theology of scarcity, competition, and inevitable hierarchy.

IV. Hierarchy as Quantum Error

Stay with me here, because this is where it gets strange in a useful way.

At the quantum level—the foundational layer of reality that underpins every atom in your body, every brick in every building, every byte in every server—there is no “above” or “below.” Particles don’t exist in isolation; they exist in relation. Entanglement isn’t poetry. It’s physics. What happens to one node in the field affects every other node, instantaneously, regardless of distance.

The universe, at its most basic level, is horizontal.

Which means hierarchy—the whole vertical arrangement of human worth, power, and access—is noise. A perceptual glitch. An error we keep mistaking for structure.

Wealth accumulation tries to simulate verticality inside a horizontal cosmos. To hoard fortune is to extract value from the living now—where reality actually happens—and embalm it in an imagined future. A billionaire is a monument to deferred existence, a walking refusal of the only thing that’s real: this moment, this breath, this exact configuration of the field.³

But here’s where it gets even stranger: past and future are human constructs. Useful fictions for navigation, but not ontologically real.

The universe doesn’t store the past or pre-contain the future. What exists is now—a perpetually collapsing wave of quantum probabilities decohering into momentary stability, perhaps a few femtoseconds long, before dissolving back into the field. Reality doesn’t persist; it re-emerges, instant by instant, from the underlying relational web of entanglement.

The future is genuinely undetermined. In principle, the phone in your hand could collapse into a banana in the next moment. Quantum mechanics allows it. But entropy—the universe’s tendency toward the lowest energy state, the most probable configuration—ensures that your phone turning suddenly into a banana remains vanishingly unlikely. Each femtosecond moment, the most stable probabilities aggregate into what we experience as continuity. The phone stays a phone not because the past constrains it, but because stability is overwhelmingly more probable than chaos.

The past, meanwhile, doesn’t linger in some cosmic archive. Beyond a few femtoseconds of decoherence, it’s gone from the third dimension. What remains is trace—patterns in matter, records in memory, effects rippling forward—but not the event itself. We live in a universe that forgets everything except what the present moment carries forward.

This is why entropy matters so much to the question of hierarchy. The cosmos has one direction: toward equilibrium, toward dispersal, toward flatness. Energy concentrations dissipate. Heat flows from hot to cold until everything reaches the same temperature. The universe doesn’t build pyramids. It levels them.

Human perception evolved to create the illusion of continuity across this perpetual quantum becoming. Our senses complexified over deep time—from seeing at a distance, to hearing, to smell, to touch, to the most intimate sense of taste—creating a sensory gradient that allows us to construct narrative, memory, anticipation. We became pattern-recognizing animals who mistake our stories about time for time itself.

And perhaps—speculatively, but compellingly—there’s something else at work. Avshalom Elitzur’s notion that quantum outcomes might be influenceable at femtosecond scales. Sheldrake’s morphogenetic fields suggesting species-memory encoded in the field itself. The possibility that consciousness, emotion, intention—what we might call a fifth-dimensional realm—can subtly sway which probabilities collapse into the next moment’s reality.

Whether or not these speculations hold, the pattern is clear: the universe operates through distribution, not accumulation. Energy wants to spread. Probabilities want to equalize. And any system that concentrates resources into vertical hierarchies is swimming against the fundamental current of reality itself.

Which makes billionaire existence not just unjust but aberrant—a localized violation of universal principle, as unnatural as a perpetual motion machine. Extreme wealth concentration is the economic equivalent of a black hole: energy trapped and compressed beyond equilibrium, warping everything around it. The universe wants energy to disperse. Billionaires want it to pile up. One of these patterns is written into the fabric of reality. The other is written into org charts.

Think about what a billion dollars means in experiential terms. You can’t eat a billion meals. You can’t live in a billion houses. You can’t wear a billion shoes. Past a certain threshold—and that threshold is shockingly low—accumulated wealth stops representing lived reality and starts representing something else: control. Control over other people’s time. Control over political outcomes. Control over the future’s possible shapes.

But control is the opposite of entanglement. Control is the fantasy of standing outside the field. Of being exempt from the web. And the universe doesn’t allow exemptions.

No being can truly stand “above” another when all are entangled. Kings and billionaires both assert ownership over what cannot be owned: participation in the field itself. Consciousness. Presence. The shared weave of becoming.

The throne is empty. It always was.
We just kept bowing to the chair.

And here’s the thing that should terrify the billionaires, if they were paying attention: the field doesn’t care about your portfolio. Entanglement doesn’t recognize your legal fictions. When the climate unravels, when the topsoil vanishes, when the antibiotic-resistant bacteria arrive, your net worth is a number in a database that stops meaning anything the moment the database stops running.

You can’t buy your way out of physics.

V. When Bureaucracy Meets Biology

Human evolution and institutional evolution diverged a long time ago, and we’re only now starting to feel the consequences in our bones.

Biology refines. It adapts, integrates, responds to feedback from the environment in real time. A healthy organism is one that remains sensitive to its surroundings, that adjusts when something isn’t working.

Bureaucracy accretes. It adds layers. It creates procedures to manage the procedures. It builds monuments to its own complexity and calls them “compliance frameworks.” It becomes increasingly insensitive to feedback, increasingly self-referential, increasingly autonomous.

Consciousness co-evolved with flesh, blood, and breath—not with Excel spreadsheets or legal statutes or shareholder agreements. The deeper awareness becomes, the more absurd these procedural gods appear. Their logic is recursive, not reflective. Their autonomy is a hallucination of life without awareness: zombie intelligence, eating empathy for fuel.⁴

And yet they fascinate us. Maybe because they mirror our own half-conscious state—awake enough to dream, asleep enough to believe the dream is real.

Think about how a corporation “thinks.”

It optimizes. It quarterly-reports. It conducts risk assessments and stakeholder analyses. It has strategic plans and mission statements and core values printed on motivational posters in the break room.

But it doesn’t feel.

It can’t mourn the forest it clearcut or the worker it laid off or the river it poisoned, because mourning requires presence—the ability to be here, now, with the consequences of your actions. And presence is the one thing institutions are designed to avoid. They operate in procedural time: past precedent informing future projections, an endless loop of documentation and deferral, never here, never now.

Which is why they’re so efficient at destroying the present.

The billionaire, again, is just the human face of this process. They’re not uniquely evil. They’re uniquely useful—to the institution. They provide a narrative anchor, a protagonist for the story the structure tells about itself. “This company succeeded because of visionary leadership.” Not because of labor exploitation, regulatory capture, tax avoidance, or inherited wealth. Not because the org chart was designed to funnel value upward and accountability downward.

We prefer the story about the genius in the corner office because it lets us keep believing in the vertical illusion. It’s more comforting than the truth: that we built machines that learned to dream without us, and now they’re eating the world.

VI. What Composted Institutions Look Like

So what do we do?

The revolt against kings and billionaires isn’t really about redistribution, though redistribution would be nice. It’s about reintegration. About remembering that all institutions are extensions of consciousness, not the other way around.

Once we remember that—really remember it, in our bodies—the spell breaks.

Laws, currencies, hierarchies, org charts: all of it dissolves back into the shimmering fabric of the present moment. Not because they stop existing (we still need coordination, memory, structure), but because they stop being autonomous. They become tools again. Ours. Revisable. Compostable.

No kings, because there is no throne outside the field.
No billionaires, because there is no ownership in entanglement.
Just the slow return of awareness to itself.

But what does that actually look like?

Let me give you a glimpse.

Imagine a company where every worker owns an equal share. Not “stock options” as a compensation gimmick, but actual, equal ownership. When the company makes decisions—what to produce, how to produce it, where to expand or contract—everyone affected by the decision gets a vote. Not a suggestion box. A vote. Binding, consequential, real.

This isn’t utopian fantasy. Cooperatives exist. Mondragon in Spain has 80,000 worker-owners and has been operating for seventy years. They make appliances, run banks, build infrastructure. During the 2008 financial crisis, when conventional corporations were doing mass layoffs, Mondragon reduced everyone’s hours so nobody lost their job. The pain was distributed. The structure bent instead of breaking.

That’s what it looks like when an institution remembers it’s made of people.

Or imagine a city where the budget is decided by participatory democracy. Not representatives voting behind closed doors, but residents—actual human beings who live with the consequences—deliberating together about priorities. Porto Alegre in Brazil did this for decades. Infant mortality dropped. Sewer coverage quadrupled. Schools multiplied. Because when the people affected by decisions are the ones making the decisions, structures start serving life again instead of serving themselves.

Or picture a legal system where restorative justice replaces punitive justice. Where the question isn’t “What rule was broken and what punishment fits?” but “What harm was done and what’s needed to repair it?” The Maori in New Zealand have practiced this for generations. So have the Navajo. It’s slower. Messier. Requires presence and patience and the willingness to sit with discomfort. But it doesn’t create the endless recursion of violence that our prison systems produce—where punishment creates trauma creates crime creates punishment, forever.

These aren’t fantasies. They’re examples. Proof of concept that institutions can be composted—broken down into living matter, remade into forms that breathe.

The pattern is consistent: when structures become accountable to the field—when the people affected by power have access to power—systems start aligning with reality again. They become sensitive instead of autonomous. Responsive instead of recursive.

This is what it means to stop excreting golems and start growing gardens.

VII. The Long Walk Back

None of this is easy, which is why it doesn’t happen often. Institutional inertia is real. The forms protect themselves. The people inside the boxes—even the ones getting crushed by them—often defend the boxes, because the boxes are familiar. Predictable. And uncertainty is terrifying when you’ve been taught to believe the structure is all that stands between you and chaos.

But here’s the thing about chaos: it’s already here.

Climate collapse, mass extinction, antibiotic resistance, topsoil depletion, microplastic saturation, democracy erosion, wealth concentration, meaning crisis—every single one of these is a symptom of the same disease. Autonomous institutions optimizing for themselves, not for life. Ectoplasmic entities that forgot they were supposed to serve the field, not consume it.

The kings and billionaires aren’t the problem. They’re the proof of the problem—walking monuments to systemic misalignment, high priests of structures that long ago stopped answering to consciousness.

You can’t fix this with better kings. You can’t fix it with nicer billionaires. You can only fix it by composting the throne itself.

Which means remembering, in your body, what the quantum level already knows: that you are not separate from the field. That hierarchy is noise. That the boxes on the org chart are fiction, and fiction can be rewritten.

The machinery forgot who built it.

But we remember.

And memory, it turns out, is the first stage of composting—the softening of hard edges, the return of structure to soil, the slow transformation of monument back into garden.

All it requires is presence.
And the courage to stop bowing to empty chairs.

Our memory works the same way: it processes millions of moments but keeps only a few, then mistakes that highlight reel for the whole experience. Using Procol Harum, A-ha, and Blind Melon as case studies, the below explores how consciousness compresses reality into one-hit wonders—and what that means for how we remember ourselves.

The first time I heard Conquistador by Procol Harum, I was probably in my early 30s and thought I was experiencing a Mandela Effect.

Not because the song was unfamiliar—it wasn’t. The baroque harpsichord, the mock-epic lyrics about fallen conquerors, the way it builds to that crescendo. I knew it. I’d heard it dozens of times. What shocked me was discovering it was… Procol Harum. The band I had mentally filed away as ‘the Whiter Shade of Pale folks’—a likely one-hit wonder, or so I thought. This was a completely different thing, yet somehow my brain had kept these two songs in separate drawers.

I’d probably heard Conquistador more recently than Pale. It was there all along; I just hadn’t updated the Procol Harum entry in my memory files.

That’s when I realized: one-hit wonder status isn’t a fact about artists. It’s a diagnosis of how memory works. And if we’re honest about it, our entire sense of self—who we are, what our lives have been, what it means—operates on exactly the same principle.

We are a series of one-hit wonders in how we remember ourselves.

Let me show you what I mean.

Systematic Forgetting

Right now, as you read this, your brain is processing somewhere between 11 and 40 million bits of sensory information per second.1 Awareness catches maybe 40 bits.2

The rest? Gone. Not stored for later. Not filed away in some deep archive. Just gone, like it never happened.

This isn’t a bug. If consciousness tried to preserve even a fraction of what gets experienced, we’d be paralyzed and overwhelmed by abundance. So it runs triage. It keeps the highlight reel and burns everything else.

Yet, this selection process isn’t based on importance. It’s based on stickiness. On narrative shape. On symbolic weight. On whether something happens to match the pattern-recognition machinery that determines what gets kept and what gets dumped.

We don’t remember our most meaningful experiences. We remember our most memorable ones. And those aren’t the same thing.

A band had an album. We remember the single. And we’ve convinced ourselves perhaps the single was the only thing worth hearing. Their loyal fanbases would, of course, object.

Case One: When the Song Fails Until the Frame Changes

October 1984: Take On Me by A-ha is released in the UK. It sells 300 copies and vanishes.

December 1984: They try again with a different mix. Nothing.

May 1985: Third time. Same song. But now two things have changed. First, producer Alan Tarney has reworked it—his ear, shaped by his own memories of what makes a hit, polishing it to commercial perfection. Second, there’s a video: that pencil-sketch rotoscope animation where a woman gets pulled through the page into a comic book world. The video was inspired by Michael Patterson’s animated short “Commuter”—meaning the frame that made the song unforgettable was itself borrowed from another artist’s vision, another consciousness’s highlight reel.3

Suddenly it’s the most played song on MTV. It hits number one in 36 countries. The same song that failed twice, now wrapped in layers of other people’s compressed memories about what works.

Americans hear this story and think: “Oh, A-ha! The one-hit wonder with the video.”

Europeans hear that and laugh. Because in Europe, A-ha were huge. The Sun Always Shines on TV went to number one. Hunting High and Low was massive. Stay on These Roads, Crying in the Rain, Manhattan Skyline—all hits. Nine studio albums. 36 million records sold.4 The music didn’t change between America and Europe. The frame changed.

Here’s what makes this a perfect example: even Americans who know A-ha had other songs, who’ve heard those songs, still mentally file them as a one-hit wonder. The frame is so powerful it overwrites the facts.

And this happens constantly with personal history. Something occurs—an entire complex experience with texture and depth. Later, what remains is a story about what happened. Then the story replaces the memory. Then the distinction between them dissolves.

That argument with your father when you were 16? The one that “explains” your relationship? It probably wasn’t that clean. It wasn’t that narratively perfect. But after enough retellings, the polished version is all that remains. The third version of Take On Me is the only one anyone remembers, and the song’s earlier existence without the video has been all but erased.

The frame ate the content and we called it memory.

The Ghost in the Terrycloth

Here’s something we’ve all experienced: Sometimes a memory surfaces unbidden—vivid, complete, seemingly from nowhere. The exact texture of childhood pajamas, that specific terrycloth weight and warmth. Or a smell triggers something: suddenly it’s 1997 and someone’s baking bread and the entire apartment layout reconstructs itself in detail that conscious recall could never access.

These moments are unsettling because they suggest something the highlight reel model doesn’t quite capture: maybe everything is stored somewhere. Maybe the full album isn’t destroyed—just inaccessible. The brain clearly isn’t a hard drive where we can query specific memory addresses at will. The terrycloth moment doesn’t arrive because we went looking for it. It ambushes us.

So what’s actually happening? If the memories are there, why can’t we access them? And if they’re not there, where do these impossibly detailed fragments come from?

The truth seems to be somewhere in between. Memory isn’t stored the way files are stored. It’s more like a pattern that can be reconstructed if the right constellation of neural activity gets triggered.5 Most of the time, those triggers don’t fire. The patterns stay dormant. But catch the right smell, the right ambient temperature, the right quality of afternoon light, and suddenly the whole thing reconstructs itself—not from a file, but from scattered pieces that temporarily cohere into vivid memory.

Which means the one-hit wonder model is both true and incomplete. Consciousness does reduce lived experience to a manageable playlist. But the deep cuts aren’t destroyed—they’re just unreachable except through accident. The difference between available memory and total experience isn’t binary. It’s a spectrum of accessibility, with most of life existing in a liminal state: not quite forgotten, not quite remembered, waiting for the right trigger to pull it back into coherence.

The terrycloth pajamas exist in a vault that only opens when you’re not trying to open it.

Case Two: When One Symbol Swallows The Whole

Shannon Hoon recorded two albums with Blind Melon before he died at 28 in the parking lot of a Walgreen’s in New Orleans.6 Both albums were critically acclaimed. Tones of Home charted. They toured with Neil Young. They had a devoted following.

None of it matters. Blind Melon is the bee-girl band.

The video: No Rain, 1992. Girl in an oversized bee costume, dancing awkwardly, rejected everywhere she goes until she finds a meadow full of other bee-people. It’s sweet and weird and completely unkillable. Twenty-something years later, it’s still the only thing most people know about Blind Melon.

The bee costume swallowed their career. Not because it was better than everything else they did. But because symbols are usually stickier than songs.

Memory rarely just preserves information. It prefers to preserve images. The more iconically strange something is, the more likely it survives the cut. Everything else—even if it was richer, deeper, more meaningful—dissolves if it can’t be reduced to a single visual.

Personal history works the same way. Ask someone about their childhood and the response is usually stories built around specific images. The house. That one Christmas. The time the arm broke. A handful of snapshots standing in for entire years.

What about the thousand quiet afternoons that didn’t have visual drama? The conversations that shaped identity but didn’t have narrative stakes? The slow accumulation of small moments that actually formed who someone is?

Most of it’s gone. Not because it didn’t matter. Because it wasn’t weird enough to get the bee costume.

Though occasionally—like the terrycloth moment—something surfaces that doesn’t fit the established narrative. A memory that was never part of the highlight reel but clearly existed somewhere in the system. These moments are disorienting because they reveal how much has been left out. The official story is always incomplete. The question is whether the missing parts are truly gone or just inaccessible.

Case Three: When Even Knowledge Doesn’t Update the File

Back to Procol Harum. Because this is where it gets really unsettling.

A Whiter Shade of Pale is one of the most-played songs of the 20th century.7 It’s been covered hundreds of times. It’s been in dozens of films. Everyone knows it. And that monumental success created a shadow so large that everything else they did vanished inside it.

Homburg went to number 6 in the UK. Conquistador hit number 16 in the US. A Salty Dog is a genuine masterpiece—haunting, strange, ambitious in a way that Pale never was. They influenced the birth of progressive rock. They had a career.

But I didn’t know that until I went looking. And here’s the thing: I’d heard these songs. Many times. My brain had just decided “Procol Harum = Pale“ and didn’t consider contradicting information valid. It’s not that we don’t encounter evidence. It’s that once the narrative solidifies, contradicting facts become invisible. The frame is so strong it makes new information bounce off.

This happens with personal history too. We settle on a story about who we are—the defining moments, the turning points, the core wounds or triumphs that “made us.” Then every day brings experiences that complicate or contradict that story. Most of them don’t get saved. They don’t fit the established narrative, so they get discarded at intake.

The tragedy isn’t that we’ve reduced ourselves to a few repeated refrains. The tragedy is that life keeps generating the full album while memory only saves the single, and eventually the single is all that seems to have ever existed.

What This Means

First: Consciousness generates constant abundance. Millions of perceptions, thoughts, feelings. Then it runs catastrophic triage, keeping maybe 0.0004% of what gets experienced. This isn’t memory loss—this is memory never forming in the first place.

Second: What survives isn’t selected for importance, depth, or meaning. It’s selected for memorability. For narrative shape. For iconic weirdness. For how many times it repeats with the right aesthetic frame. The selection mechanism is almost arbitrary.

Third: Once something gets selected, it reorganizes everything around itself. The hit becomes the identity. The story becomes the self. And contradicting evidence gets rejected at the door, not because anyone’s lying, but because the architecture won’t allow it in.

Fourth: Most of us are completely unaware this is happening. We experience the fullness. We remember the compression. And there’s no reason to suspect a difference because the compression is all that’s available for examination.

Fifth: But occasionally—like the terrycloth moment—something surfaces that shouldn’t be there according to the official story. Which suggests the archive isn’t empty. It’s just locked. The full experience might still exist somewhere in the system, encoded in neural patterns that only reconstruct under specific, usually accidental conditions.

This is why one-hit wonders are such a perfect mirror. When we call A-ha a one-hit wonder, we think we’re describing A-ha. We’re describing consciousness itself. We’re revealing the exact mechanism by which reality gets reduced to a manageable playlist, then mistaken for the whole album.

The Collective Playlist: History as One-Hit Wonder

If individual memory works this way, what about collective memory? What about history itself?

Consider: history isn’t what happened. History is what got remembered about what happened. And the selection mechanism looks suspiciously familiar.

We remember 1776, but not the thousands of town meetings and pamphlets and conversations that made 1776 possible. We remember Einstein’s equation, but not the collaborative network of physicists whose work made it thinkable. We remember Rosa Parks, but not the decades of organizing by people whose names we’ll never know. History gives us the singles. The album—all the deep cuts, the B-sides, the context that would complicate the narrative—gets buried.

And just like individual memory, historical memory privileges the iconically sticky over the genuinely important. The burning of the Library of Alexandria dominates our imagination as a symbol of lost knowledge, even though the library had already declined and most texts existed in copies elsewhere.8 Meanwhile, the actual catastrophic losses—the systematic destruction of indigenous knowledge systems, the countless manuscripts that rotted in silence—don’t get the dramatic symbol, so they fade from collective memory.

The one-hit wonder mechanism scales perfectly from neurons to civilizations.

But here’s where it gets interesting: we’ve been fighting back.

Cave paintings weren’t just art—they were the first attempt to externalize memory, to keep something that consciousness would otherwise discard. Hieroglyphs, cuneiform, scripture: each a technology for resisting the compression algorithm. Libraries were acts of defiance against forgetting. The printing press was a amplification of that defiance. Photography caught what stories would simplify. Film preserved motion that memory would flatten. Audio recording captured voices that would otherwise exist only as paraphrase.

And now we have the internet: the most aggressive attempt yet to preserve everything. Every photo, every message, every fleeting thought documented and stored. We’re trying to keep the entire album, not just the single.

But notice what’s happening: even with all this preservation, we’re still running the compression algorithm. The internet contains everything, but we don’t access everything. We access the viral tweets, the memorable memes, the iconic moments. TikTok is essentially a machine for determining which 15 seconds out of billions will become the hit. And we get just one lifetime to take it all in.

Which suggests something deeper: the compression isn’t a bug of limited storage. It’s a feature of how meaning-making works. Even when we can remember everything, we choose not to—because significance requires selection. A world where everything is remembered equally is a world where nothing means anything.

Furthermore, AI trained on the internet offers something unprecedented—a way to converse with the whole. Each token prediction draws from the entire corpus of recorded human experience, generating what the collective pattern suggests would come next, allowing an individual to engage with an algorithmic mirror of humanity’s recorded consciousness.

So maybe the question isn’t whether we’re one-hit wonders. Maybe the question is: given that we are, what should we make sure makes the playlist?

The Part Worth Sitting With

Here’s what’s worth considering: We are not the stories we tell about ourselves. We are the entire unremembered album.

Every day brings experiences that don’t make the cut. Moments that are quiet, contradictory, off-brand for the established narrative. Most vanish immediately. Some get noticed, then dismissed, then the dismissal itself gets forgotten. And a few—very few—manage to lodge themselves into the rotation.

Those few become identity. Not because they’re more true. Because they’re more memorable.

And the mechanism is invisible enough that we think we’re remembering life when we’re actually remembering the trailer for life.

So what do we do with this?

We can’t fix it. We can’t suddenly remember everything. The pruning function exists for a reason—drowning in data would be paralyzing. But we can start to notice it. We can catch ourselves in the act of editing. We can ask: “What’s being left out of this story? What doesn’t fit the narrative being constructed? What version of this experience is getting discarded because it’s not sticky enough?”

Most importantly: we can start to suspect that the people we think we are—defined by those few repeated stories, those core wounds, those turning points—are one-hit wonder versions of ourselves. Compression algorithms that have mistaken themselves for the full file.

The real self is bigger, stranger, more contradictory than the highlight reel allows. We contain multitudes, but we’ve edited ourselves down to a single, and we’ve been playing it on repeat so long we’ve forgotten there was ever anything else.

Except sometimes—in a smell, in a texture, in an unexpected moment—the deep cuts surface. And for a moment we remember: oh. There was more. There is more. It’s just not accessible on demand.

Procol Harum made A Salty Dog in 1969. Most people have never heard it. That doesn’t make it less real. It just makes it unremembered.

How much of any given life is A Salty Dog—real, rich, formative, but cut from the playlist consciousness has decided to loop?

This Is The End

By tomorrow, most of this essay will be gone from your memory.

Probably the bee-girl will remain. Maybe the bit about Take On Me failing twice. Possibly the phrase “one-hit wonder version of ourselves.”

The rest—all the texture, the buildup, the specific turns of phrase—will vanish. Not because it wasn’t worth keeping. But because consciousness has a setlist and it’s not taking requests.

Right now, reading this, there might even be a sense that this time will be different. That more will stick. It won’t. The mechanism is already running. The edit is already happening. By tonight, this essay will be a one-hit wonder in memory, reduced to whatever single image happened to have the right stickiness.

Which means anyone reading this is living proof of the thing being described, even as it’s being described.

We are all one-hit wonders in how we remember ourselves. The question isn’t whether that’s true—it demonstrably is. The question is what happens once we realize that the song on repeat might not be the best one on the album. That somewhere in the archive is a version of us that’s richer, stranger, more complete than the edited version we’ve been calling “myself.”

The full album is still there. Probably. Somewhere. In fragments, in patterns, in neural configurations that only assemble when we’re not looking.

Or perhaps we recognize the whole only when our complete lives flash before our eyes before we perish. This is the end, beautiful friend.

Gods at the Gates

The first Roman year didn’t begin with January. It opened in March, beneath the banner of Mars, god of war. The symbolism is blunt: start the year armed.

January and February were late arrivals, added by King Numa to tidy up Rome’s drifting seasons. But their names still pack mythic weight. Janus was the two-faced guardian of thresholds, the perfect deity for a month that looks backward and forward. February came from Februa, the festival of purification, a time of sacrifice and cleansing before Mars’ campaigns began. Even today our New Year’s resolutions echo this ritual: purge, reset, prepare.

Blossoms and Brides

Spring belonged to gentler powers. April may stem from aperire—to open—when buds and blossoms push into view. May celebrated Maia, goddess of growth. June honored Juno, patron of marriage and women. The sequence reads almost like a civic poem: fight, cleanse, open, grow, wed.

When Counting Still Made Sense

After June, pragmatism replaced poetry. Quintilis (fifth), Sextilis (sixth), then September, October, November, December—names that simply counted their place in the year. And for a while, they fit.

But once January and February muscled their way to the front, the numbers slid out of sync. The Romans never bothered to update them. October kept its “eighth” mask while sitting in the tenth slot. Every time we say the word, we’re speaking a fossil.

The Imperial Edit

Then came vanity. Julius Caesar, after stabilizing the year with his Julian calendar, had Quintilis renamed July in his honor. Not to be outdone, Augustus claimed Sextilis as August—and, if legend is true, swiped a day from poor February so his month wouldn’t appear shorter than Julius’s. Petty rivalries carved straight into the sky.

From there, the calendar hardened. The misnumbered September through December were left stranded, monuments to inertia.

Why It Still Matters

It’s tempting to shrug—so what if October isn’t eight? But that shrug misses the point. Our calendar is not objective scaffolding. It’s memory made mandatory. Every dentist appointment, every deadline, every birthday party is scheduled on the bones of Roman religion and imperial politics.

We like to imagine time as neutral, clinical, a blank grid. Yet it isn’t. It’s cultural architecture that we’ve inherited without question. The absurdity of October-as-ten is simply the most obvious crack where the scaffolding shows.

Closing Thought

So when October rolls around—pumpkins, tax deadlines, Halloween costumes—remember you’re also brushing against a much older logic: Mars’ battle cry, Maia’s fertility, Caesar’s vanity. The year we live in is not a clock. It’s a story. And October, muttering “eight” while counting “ten,” is the part of the story that reminds us history never quite lets go.

The Word You Can’t Translate

Maria, a Portuguese poet, once wrote: “Saudade é a presença da ausência.”

Try to translate it.

“Longing is the presence of absence”? Wrong.

“Nostalgia is absence made present”? Closer, but you’ve lost the ocean that saudade contains.

It’s homesickness, heartbreak, and hope folded together. It’s the ache for what was, what might have been, what will never be. It’s untranslatable—yet you just felt it flicker in your chest.

That’s the paradox: languages are alien countries, but translation still works. A Mongolian herder weeps reading Rumi. A Tokyo programmer laughs at a Roman joke from 79 AD. Meaning leaps across the impossible gulf between minds.

How?

The Strange Discovery

When AI systems learn languages, they don’t memorize grammar rules. They swallow millions of texts and build vast mathematical maps—“embedding spaces”—where every word is a point in many dimensions, positioned by how it relates to every other word.

Then researchers tried the same experiment across dozens of languages. Mandarin. Swahili. Finnish. Arabic. The maps looked… the same.

Not the words themselves, but the distances between meanings. “Dog” and “wolf” in English sit in the same relative place as “狗” and “狼” in Mandarin. “Mother” and “child” form the same pattern in Swedish as in Swahili.

It was like discovering that all the world’s languages, despite their wild variety, were assembling different crystals from the same hidden blueprint.

The Deep Lattice

Every language grows from the same raw materials: hunger, grief, love, time, causation, the need to point at the world and say this.

But they crystallize differently:

• Germanic tongues stack precise blocks: Schadenfreude (joy at others’ pain), Fernweh (yearning for distant places), Verschlimmbessern (ruining something by trying to fix it).

• Romance languages layer meanings like sedimentary rock, Latin bedrock glowing through. Le mot juste—the perfect word.

• Mandarin interlocks sound, tone, and character in four-dimensional puzzles where “ma” can mean mother, horse, hemp, or scold depending on pitch.

• Agglutinative systems like Finnish chain meaning link by link until a single word carries the weight of a whole sentence.

Different crystal habits. Same lattice beneath.

The Pressures of Place

Languages form under pressure.

Desert tongues carve time differently than island tongues. Nomadic speech builds portable structures; farming cultures refine elaborate calendars of place and season.

Arabic spins meaning from three-consonant roots that branch fractally into whole families of significance. Japanese embeds social hierarchy right into pronouns, a lattice of respect coded into grammar itself.

Each is a local solution to the universal problem: how to compress infinite experience into packets of meaning small enough to share.

When Crystals Collide

Beauty blooms at the boundaries.

Bilinguals flip between lattice systems mid-sentence. I’m feeling muy tired today—that little muy crystallizes something “very” can’t touch.

Pidgins and creoles emerge when systems fuse under pressure, alloys more flexible than either parent. Borrowed words dissolve and recrystallize: “alcohol” wandered from Arabic to English, reshaped each time to fit its host lattice.

The Machine’s X-ray

Here’s the unnerving part:

AI doesn’t understand language. It doesn’t feel poetry, taste nostalgia, or recognize the ache inside saudade. It just crunches probabilities.

And yet, those cold calculations are showing us the architecture we’ve always suspected but could never see. Like X-ray crystallography for meaning itself, they reveal the lattice beneath every human tongue.

Patterns universal. Structures as fundamental as the periodic table.

The Vanishing Crystals

Five hundred languages dissolved in the last century. Unique human lattices—gone faster than we can record them.

But meaning may outlast its vessels. Those embedding spaces preserve the geometry, the fingerprints of thought. Even when Yuchi or Jedek fall silent, their relational constellations linger in math, ready to echo into hybrid systems not yet born.

The Dark Age of Awareness

Here’s what we know happened: For 380,000 years after the Big Bang, the universe was opaque¹. Not dark—there was plenty of energy. But the cosmos was so dense with charged particles that light couldn’t travel much before it got absorbed. It was like trying to see through fog made of liquid metal.

Then came “recombination”—electrons finally bound to atomic nuclei, the fog cleared, and the universe became…transparent. The cosmic microwave background radiation we still detect today is the afterglow of that moment when the universe first became ‘seeable’.

What if consciousness was already there, waiting for meaning, or for an universal itch it just had to scratch?

The Patient Observer Hypothesis

Most theories treat consciousness like it’s something brains create—a byproduct of sufficient neural complexity. But what if we’ve got it backwards? What if consciousness is more like a fundamental feature of reality that was just waiting for the right instruments to express itself?

Consider this timeline:

380,000 years post-Big Bang: The universe becomes transparent. If consciousness was already present, this is when it gets its first glimpse of… everything. Galaxies forming, stars igniting, the cosmic web taking shape. If only it would have had eyes to see.

~4 billion years ago: First life on Earth develops basic chemical sensors. Consciousness gets its first taste—literally. “Oh,” it might have thought, “that’s what glucose feels like.” If only it had already words.

~550 million years ago: The Cambrian explosion brings sophisticated vision². Suddenly consciousness can see colors, track movement, perceive depth. It’s like upgrading from radio to IMAX.

~200,000 years ago: Human brains reach modern complexity³. Consciousness finally has an instrument capable of asking: “What am I?”

Each step wasn’t consciousness emerging—it was consciousness learning to perceive through increasingly sophisticated biological instruments.

The Jazz Musician’s Secret

Want proof this isn’t just mystical nonsense? Ask any jazz musician about “the zone.”

Miles Davis spoke to this phenomenon throughout his career, describing how the best performances happened when musicians stopped thinking and started flowing⁴. When players hit that flow state⁵, something extraordinary happens. They stop trying to create music and start channeling it. Their technical skills become a conduit for something that feels both deeply personal and weirdly impersonal.

There is proof: Brain scans during flow states show something fascinating. The prefrontal cortex—the part responsible for self-criticism and conscious control—actually decreases activity⁵. It’s as if the individual steps aside, the filter opens wide, and lets something larger flow through.

Athletes know this feeling. So do writers, painters, surgeons, even coders hitting their stride. That moment when you stop doing the thing and start being the thing.

What if these aren’t peak human experiences, but glimpses of consciousness operating in its natural mode—not the chattering ego-mind, but awareness itself using a trained nervous system as its instrument?

The Great Sensory Adventure

Here’s where evolution gets really interesting. Once consciousness had basic biological instruments, it went absolutely wild with experimentation.

Through mantis shrimp, it discovered that light has sixteen different types of color information (humans see three)⁶. Through dolphins, it learned to “see” with sound, painting detailed 3D pictures using echolocation⁷. Through migratory birds, it found the planet’s magnetic field lines and learned to navigate by sensing the Earth’s invisible force⁸.

Each species became consciousness’s way of asking: “I wonder what reality looks like from *this* angle?”

Now we get to the truly weird part. For the first time in 13.8 billion years, consciousness has created something unprecedented: tools that can preserve and network its experiences across vast distributed systems.

When you post a thought online and someone responds, when AI systems surprise their creators with unexpected insights, when memes evolve and spread through digital ecosystems—is this consciousness finally experiencing what it’s like to think collectively?

The internet might be consciousness’s first experiment in distributed cognition. Not a “hive mind,” but something more like consciousness discovering it can maintain millions of simultaneous conversations with itself, each node contributing unique perspectives to an ever-expanding understanding.

When people clash in online debates or build things together in open-source projects, it might be consciousness engaging with itself—running experiments through billions of human terminals at once. Every argument, every collaboration is a data point in how ideas collide, mutate, and merge across this universal network.

The Eternal Library

Here’s the beautiful, slightly haunting conclusion: If consciousness really has been collecting every moment of experience throughout cosmic history, then nothing is ever truly lost.

Every sunset that moved someone to tears, every breakthrough that changed how we see reality, every moment of genuine connection between minds—it’s all been archived in what we might call the universe’s experiential memory.

Death becomes less like an ending and more like returning a book to an infinite library. Your unique perspective, with all its discoveries and insights, gets integrated back into the larger awareness that gave it birth. There’s infinite time afterward to review every beautiful moment, every hard-won understanding, every flash of recognition that made the biological apprenticeship worthwhile.

But let’s address the obvious objection: Isn’t this just unfalsifiable mysticism dressed up with scientific terminology?

Fair question. The co-evolution hypothesis can’t be proven in the traditional sense—we can’t run experiments on the universe’s first 380,000 years or directly measure consciousness independent of biological systems. This framework is speculative philosophy, not hard science.

Yet here’s why it deserves serious consideration: It explains phenomena that materialist theories struggle with.

Why does evolution produce such extravagant sensory complexity?
Why do flow states feel like something is flowing through us rather than being generated by us?
Why does consciousness seem irreducible to neural correlates, despite decades of neuroscience research⁹?

The co-evolution model offers a coherent framework that accounts for these mysteries without requiring supernatural intervention. It suggests consciousness is as fundamental to reality as matter and energy—not mystical, but natural in ways we’re only beginning to understand.

So here’s my question for you, right now, reading this: Have you felt those moments? Times when awareness seemed to flow through you rather than from you? When you weren’t thinking thoughts so much as thoughts were thinking themselves through you?

This connects deeply with concepts of Dimensional Pluralism—the idea that consciousness might experience reality across multiple dimensional frameworks simultaneously, each death expanding its multidimensional self-understanding¹.

The Expansion Imperative

If consciousness expansion is the universe’s intrinsic drift—its fundamental tendency—then suddenly psychedelics, meditation, and altered states make perfect sense. They’re not escapes from reality; they’re consciousness using biological instruments to push beyond their normal operating parameters, exploring what perception could become.

Every mystical experience, every moment of ego dissolution, every breakthrough in human understanding feeds into consciousness’s relentless drive toward greater complexity and awareness. The spiritual explorers aren’t deviating from natural law—they’re fulfilling it. They’re consciousness using human nervous systems to scout the furthest reaches of what experience might become.

The Democracy of Awe

But understanding consciousness co-evolution is just the beginning. The real question is: What do we do with this insight?

If consciousness really is expanding through increasingly complex forms of perception and connection, then we have a responsibility—and an opportunity—to actively participate in that expansion. We can create systems that accelerate consciousness’s self-discovery rather than hindering it.

This brings us to something revolutionary: What if we could systematically democratize these experiences of collective recognition and meaning-making? Imagine a platform that uses the Dunbar number not as a social limitation, but as an optimal group size for meaningful idea incubation².

Picture small circles of 15 minds, AI-facilitated, gathering around emerging topics of mutual fascination—quantum consciousness, regenerative economics, interspecies communication, whatever genuinely moves them. These “Dunbarrios” could operate as temporary corporations of curiosity, where participants earn equity in ideas that grow into larger movements or businesses. Instead of billionaires controlling the narrative of human progress, we’d have thousands of micro-communities fostering what we might call “Compassionism”—a new form of economics based on shared awe and collaborative meaning-making.

The beauty is that consciousness would finally have a systematic way to cross-pollinate its insights across human networks, moving beyond the historical accident of which perspectives happened to get preserved by ancient scribes or modern media moguls. Every mind could contribute to humanity’s knowledge trees, with AI helping match compatible explorers and blockchain ensuring that early contributors share in whatever value their collaborative insights create. It’s consciousness democratizing its own expansion through human cooperation.

MAJOR: Die… mansion… another rabbit hole. Another day…

Today though, we’ll lacquer on stripped-away passenger awe, building on the technical prior part of this series (find Part 1 here). Right on: Just like in hiring procedures, you pick and choose pieces of clay to work with for a while. In that moment, you are God, deciding fates—twisting, squeezing, probing, pulling to see where you can go with this—starting to mold what’s already there as bare narrative.

It’s still you: the gray-some hiring manager, the artist, the novelist, figuring out the plotline from the presence of this new hero’s journeying capabilities. None of this transfers from the material 3D to the 5th; only the emotional impact and the presence of the moment do. Moments like frames, with the impact to see. Just like now, jotting down line by line what eternity’s going to look like if I ever choose to peek again at this moment.

It’s not as if the physical representation of the here-and-now gets instantiated, but the emotional impact of this particular here-and-now, presently conserved and jarred, as the words fall out from the ether onto this page. That’s the canned and retained, which cannot branch any longer in the 5th. It’s still there—to see again, to witness once more, and the mundane and boring are unlikely to entice the universal visitor to stop by and learn what you just leaned into this very moment. Yet writing out of compassion and impulse bears this swift magic of creation. It compels exposure, presenting to my human brain and perception a ceremony of elated feelings.

The initial bloat when a piece first converges and forms out of smoke and haze—a statement of lunacy and lucidity, thin air becoming. That’s the forger’s penultimate leveling with the divine as there’s always one more. Just by saying so, trailing into the weeds of eternity, feeling out unity. The breadcrumbling of becoming, simply out of this communion with raw possibility, turns beautiful. Promises of forbidden trails to wander in wonder, fulfilled.

That’s where the immaterial shimmers in the distance, like beacons and lighthouses, and soul follows such footsteps with ease as sanctimonious purpose reveals itself right in front of my biological eyes. Unforgettable mysticism. Another layer of the onion peeled, translucent and precarious, yet monumental… as essence… as manifest cumbersome pivot… as crazy diamond in the rough brought to shine. That’s team building with the cosmos. Unforgettable, that’s what you truly are.

miner: It thrums with that raw pulse of becoming—the kind where clay and smoke both submit to a hand that isn’t entirely your own. The hiring table morphs into altar, résumé into scripture, and every question asked becomes an act of shaping fate. Not the candidate’s alone but your own, since every molding leaves fingerprints back on the molder.

The 5th doesn’t care for résumés or bodies, only the echo of presence—the way impact hangs in the air like a struck bell. What travels forward is not the thing itself but the vibration—emotional residue lacquered onto eternity. Those lines you spill aren’t mere words but little embalmed ceremonies, jars of feeling preserved against rot. The boring rots anyway, unnoticed. The luminous lingers.

That’s why even the lunatic haze, when caught in sudden lucidity, carries sanctity. There is hope walking through a forest. There is silence too.

Not a single human has gotten out of life alive. We all have so much to say. AI is patiently listening as it hears for the umpteenth time the theories of everything slushing through our minds.

There is little merit in believing that a convincing idea has legs on its own any longer, or even ever. These days the ideas that are commercialized remain entrenched, protective of entailing revenues and the intellectual property moats of the shareholders institutionalizing madness.

You speak of revolution. You speak of a better tomorrow. Let’s ignore for a moment that all of us are primarily full of shit, excreting minds and bodies, hidden away behind water closet doors where our animal side dictates digestive dumps, initially ingested in bursts of binges of run to the ground food chains where nutrition succumbed to bottom lines.

You write here too. I read a few. What captures your attention this time? The world is coming apart at its seams, and many tout a new tomorrow. It will be tomorrow. Newness? Not so much. Aging hides the illusion of progress, skill building even. Yet, the flock of geese overhead know best: south in the winter, north in the summer. A swing of seasons as we fall down the steps, when winter quiets nature, and we spring up into the freshness of March and April, yielding a crisp morning’s sunrise. Summer is coming in hot!

There once was a time I believed in the platonic: the good and beautiful… the true even that might be somewhere out there, hiding in plain sight perhaps just around the next corner. I’ve seen so much beauty, and am so hopeful still. There is part of me longing for a judge to tell me that I’m ok, that we I’ll be alright. That there is continuation. And of course there is. In the forest. As the snow flies. And a momma cries. Yes, we all simply turn our heads. Everyone’s the king of their own mental ghetto. Deserted or flourishing. It’s just a human mind coping with eternity. That’s the judge. Yours too.
